C'mon guilty white liberals, tell how how our American culture is really not any better than Ethiopian culture.

A lot depends on circumstances.

For example, for all we know many women in Ethiopia may be too sick to bear children by the time they're in their twenties.

And/or they may not live or be strong enough to raise children in their 20's and 30's.

AS for girls becoming brides before puberty, it may be that such marriages are not consummated until the girl is older anyway.

All this is not so different from the arranged marriages of the rich or royal in the West--where marriages were--and still are--arranged to consolidate power.

Just so those Ethiopian goat herders--or whatever they do--marry off their girls for economic reasons, which in the case of those Ethiopians is more excusable than the rich and/or royal classes of the West, as for the Ethiopians such marriages may make the very difference between a family starving or not.

But for whatever reason, the custom works for them else I'm sure such practices would have died out.

You wouldn't want your daughter to marry someone like him, would you?

Sounds like you have control issues of your own.

Perhaps some, FRiend. However, in the comparison between myself and my wife's parents; its not even close.

My "control issue" is that I get ticked off by other people's arbitrary rules that are designed strictly to obtain compliance for compliance's sake. My wife's parents made this a policy with all three of their kids, to some seriously detrimental effects. I was determined that my in-laws rigid control of their kids would NOT extend to my household - if that is a "control issue", then I plead guilty. I have very few hard and fast "rules" in my household - go with the flow is my policy.

I am the "man of the house" but I never arbitrarily issue edicts to keep "control". My wife is a free woman that is with me because we love each other. My little girl (and any future kids) will "mind" Daddy, but Daddy won't use that compliance to browbeat them into total dependence for every decision about their lives and futures.

IMHO, children should be taught responsibility, then be allowed to make their mistakes. They will never learn to make right choices if you never let them make any at all.

In our modern society, parents are treated practically as abusers if they deny or discipline their kids. Most horrible of all are those states with laws that allow kids to have abortions without their parents' knowledge.

Now THAT I can agree with, FRiend. Maybe you aren't totally whacked, after all.

I wouldn't want any woman to marry a man who thinks that....

a) walking into a man's home is an invitation to rape

b)Men 'own' women because when they are married they become his property.

c) His word is law and the wife needs to shut up.

I would consider any man who would think or say such a thing the ultimate pig and would warn all women of the world to stay away and run like hell.

I would not throw stones considering the state of marriage and morality in this country.
