The McCain mutiny - (Thomas Sowell at his best! thinks Frist really lost a lot of ground)
JEWISH WORLD REVIEW.COM ^ | MAY 27, 2005 | THOMAS SOWELL

The biggest winner is Senator John McCain, who once again sold out both principles and party, to the applause of the mainstream media. Not only is he assured of good publicity, he has pulled the rug out from under Majority Leader William Frist, his probable chief rival for the 2008 Republican Presidential nomination.

Winning a showdown with the Democrats by using the so-called "nuclear option" to stop the filibustering of judicial nominees would have given Senator Frist the kind of name-recognition that McCain already has and would be a major achievement to solidify the support of the conservative Republican base.

Now, after having been blindsided by the McCain mutiny, Frist looks ineffective as Majority Leader and questionable as a potential President of the United States.

Those who claim that Senator McCain has forfeited the support of the Republican base by selling out his party must not realize that McCain never had the support of that base in the first place, as shown by their votes in the 2000 Republican primaries.

Is it wrong for me to despise McCain? I believe that I do, with justifications. He is all about himself. He ought to form a club with Gore and Kerry.

"Winning a showdown with the Democrats by using the so-called 'nuclear option' to stop the filibustering of judicial nominees would have given Senator Frist the kind of name-recognition that McCain already has and would be a major achievement to solidify the support of the conservative Republican base."

This is a key paragraph - and if Frist does not step up now and pull the trigger - his momentum will be lost.

However, remember during the 2000 primaries - Bush was blindsided by McCain - and Bush did the unthinkable - he fought back. McCain's intimidation did not work on Bush - and I guess we'll see if it works on Frist.

I'd like to see George Allen elected to Majority Leader - so we could see him LEAD. I'm basing it on Allen's statement that "this is no time to cower in the corner".

IMHO, Frist is in a real pickle. He doesn't have the cojones to lead his party. He doesn't have the cojones to reel in the RINOS. And yet he desperately needs something, anything to show off in his presidential bid.

Hmmm......

Although I share your opinion about Frist's ability to lead, to an extent he's hamstrung...with friends like Snowe, Chafee, McCain, and DeWine--who needs enemies?

In other words, these RINO's could make any Majority Leader look bad.

Our only hope is the 2006 election. I say we should target the weak Democrat Senators, pad our lead, and jettison the RINO's.

Over on tradesports.com, they're taking bets on the 2008 nominees.

Since January I've had placements on Condi & George Allen for the Republicans (in either order), and Mark Warner(Gov VA) & ?? for the Rats.

Common sense would dictate that the Rats not run Hitlery for any Exec Office position, but she has a lot of chips on the table. She may be the Bob Dole of 2008, an atrocious and losing candidate nominated only by virture of deposits to The Favor Bank (e.g., PAC money).

Keep in mind that Thomas Sowell is a prof. at Virginia's George Mason Univ., and I'm a Virginia resident as well, so there might be some bias toward Allen.

Frist is simply a guy waiting to become a vice president...and nothing more. His faint hope might be that Condi picks him as her running mate in 2008. As for McCain...he may think his big shot is coming up...but lets look at a race between Hillery and McCain. Both are stubborn fools if brought to a debate stand. At best...he give Hillery a chance to win because most Americans (over 70 percent) would prefer not to have him as President.

Frist should resign, he lost control of the Senate.

I've been disgusted with him since his membership in the Keating Five. Why they didn't wind up in prison is beyond me!

" He is all about himself. He ought to form a club with Gore and Kerry."

What a totally BRILLIANT (yet so simple) statement you just made, PackerBoy! I love that idea. What a trio. It would read like a fledgling new law firm: Gore, Kerry & McCain.........."serving your community's legal needs any which way you like it..."

Thanks for the comment!

"I've been disgusted with him since his membership in the Keating Five."

I will NEVER forgive John McCain for his betrayal of John O'Neill, Jerry Corsi and the Swift Boat Vets for Truth. That terminated any respect I had left for this self-serving Senator from Arizona.

Ditto for Bill O'Reilly......and for the same reason.

Frist, through no fault of his own, has been undermined.
Undermining stinks.
Undermining stinks even worse when it comes from supposed teammates.
McCain stinks.

I am favor of recalling McCain.

Frist has not been much of a leader. Senators are too full of themselves to be president. Good senators like Kyl do not get the limelight.

"This is a key paragraph - and if Frist does not step up now and pull the trigger - his momentum will be lost."

As it is now, Frist would not have the votes if he 'pulled the trigger.'

That has to wait to see if the dems default on their deal. If so, then some of the seven Republicans will support the rule change, thereby somewhat redeeming Frist.

But regardless of how this plays out, Frist has demonstrated he is NOT the calibre of leader, to justify being President.

If he was, this would not have taken place, for he would have "controlled" three of the seven, and had the rule change votes securely in hand.

And even if he had the votes, he might have cut a similar deal, and taken credit for the "leadership" to accomplish same.

He should have written: Those who claim that the GOP has forfeited the support of the religous base must not realize that the GOP never had the support of that base in the first place, as shown by their votes in the 2000 Republican primaries.

I agree that the RINOs have to be jettisoned. They are one of the chief reasons we are five years into Republican control of two of the three branches of the federal government with precious little to show for it. RINOs side with the rats time and time again. Having a majority is meaningless unless it is a real majority.

What we have in the Senate is a faux-majority, a majority in name only. Senators like Snowe, Collins, Chaffee, Specter, et al are rats in terms of their positions on the majority of issues that many, many folks went to the polls in 2002 and 2004 in hopes of changing. This gang is going to stand with the rats and fight any attempt to constrain the leftists running amok in the courts for the simple reason that they are leftists themselves. Since this is the case, we need a long-term strategy to capture additional seats in states where conservatives have a real chance (like Nevada) and leave RINOs in places like Maine to twist in the wind, for they are worse than useless.
