I am so sick of the lefty press, people who polling tells us are largely non-religious or atheist, weeping over mistreatment of the "Holy Koran."
First: If they are going to call the Koran the "Holy Koran," then the Bible ought to merit the "holy" adjective as well.
Second: The lefty writers write in seeming shock, sadness, and outrage that the Muslim holy book was "touched inappropriately." Please. Inasmuch as the writers largely don't believe in God, why do they give a damn? For them it is about as sacred as the TV Guide.
But, they DO give a damn simply because they know that their reporting of these MINOR incidents will forward two of their goals:
(1) Bad press for the Bush Administration (2) Turmoil in the Muslim world, causing more of number (1), above.
A real twofer.
Muslim detainees and the Muslim holy book are treated far better in U.S. captivity than they would be in any other country on the face of the earth, including Muslim countries.
It is time that U.S. government officials stop apologizing, and raise the BS flag. They oughta say:
"In the past some of our people did things to the Koran that some Muslims seem to consider inappropriate. Let's face it: if such things were done by the guards to a Christian Bible or Jewish Torah there would be little notice, so we consider the excessive press relegated to these stories a tad curious and disproportional, especially since the press never seems to worry about disrespect to Christian and Jewish symbols, "the piss Christ" and the "Madonna surrounded by dung," for example. Regardless, we have directed our guards to be more careful, but we are not going to get all weepy about inadvertent and unintentional disrespect to a BOOK. We have given FAR MORE consideration to these Muslim detainees with regard to their religious and dietary practices than we have ever done for any group of detainees or prisoners in the history of the republic; and we are exceedingly proud of this record. But, our guards are not clerics and they cannot and will not be schooled in the intricacies of how an Imam would treat a Koran in a mosque. As I just stated, I believe our guards and camp systems have been extraordinarily respectful to Muslim religious sensitivities. We will continue to do our utmost to uphold this standard, but this standard is way more than is required. ORDINARY DEFERENCE, the kind of deference we would give to Christian or Jewish detainees is all the Muslim detainees merit. Equal deference should be given to all religions. But, as is the U.S. tradition, we are doing more than is required. This will be my last comment on the Koran in the toilet story."
When I start seeing banner headlines in the NY Times about instances of lack of respect for Christianity and Judaism (and their symbols and traditions) I will begin to take their hand-wringing pieces on disrepsect for the "Holy" Koran seriously.
Very well written. If only some of our military & political leadership had this level of clarity and forthrightness!
Excellent! Every point right on the money.
Hollywood, the MSM, HBO, Time Magazine, and the New York Times have been flushing the Holy Bible down the toilet for decades, So? What's the big deal?
Only a foolish nation would fret over how it handles the enemy's playbook.
