Her 27-year-old son, Army Staff Sgt. Anthony Lagman (search), was killed last year in Afghanistan, but American Gold Star Mothers Inc., has rejected Lagman, a Filipino, for membership because — though a permanent resident and a taxpayer — she is not a U.S. citizen.

Conspired with lawyer to get Gold Star to reject her application so they could get them to change the rule.
I say, become a citizen, and re-apply problem solved.

I have a problem with the way this came about. To live here for 20 years and not become a citizen is rediculous.
Let Gold Star evaluate their rules and make exceptions for someone who deserves it, not someone who applied with the intention of causing a S--t storm.

In an open and free society, people can honestly have differences of opinion.

And most of those parents are U.S. citizens; that is where your argument fails. You are punishing a "patriotic" LPR for the "unpatriotic" act of a true citizen.
As a leader of an organization with a charter, I can see both sides of this issue.
I lead a Cub Scout pack. Our charter states that we are made up of home schooled students only. A mom called and told us she home schooled one kid and not the other (don't ask my opinion on that) She wanted to know if we would allow the non-home schooled kid to join as well. We discussed it for a long time and declined to accept the boy because it would dilute our charter for the next time a question arose. FWIW, she told us that she would go along with either decision.
This is crazy. I don't care if she isn't a citizen or not. Her son died serving this country and she deserves this recognition. If our miltary doesn't have a citizenship requirement, why does the Gold Star organization have one?

You may assume anything you wish. Stupidity is not a crime. I just question your assumption of "..a "patriotic" LPR", as opposed to one who is an opportunist and an enemy within, even though a child is a hero. The point being that the two are not mutually exclusive..
