Schools ordered to observe ‘Constitution Day’

WASHINGTON - The Constitution long has ensured that Congress can’t tell schools what to teach. But that’s no longer the case for at least one topic — the Constitution itself. advertisement The Education Department outlined Tuesday how it plans to enforce a little-known provision that Congress passed in 2004: Every school and college that receives federal money must teach about the Constitution on Sept. 17, the day the document was adopted in 1787. Schools can determine what kind of educational program they want, but they must hold one every year on the now-named “Constitution Day and Citizenship Day.” And if Sept. 17 falls on a weekend or holiday, schools must schedule a program immediately before or after that date. Historically, the federal government has avoided dictating what or when anything must be taught because those powers rest with the states under the 10th Amendment. The Education Department’s Web site even underlines that point, saying matters such as the development of curricula and the setting of course requirements fall outside federal authority.

This is bad news for the left. If anybody remembers the poll that came out not too long ago where students thought that the government should regulate what the media reports........

The schools aren't teaching the constitution now. But why is that?

Now they don't have any choice. No more hiding the constitution.

NEWSFLASH! The Constitution hasn't been taught for thirty years. How can we make people want and/or love something that they have no knowledge about?

"Class, there are two things to remember about the Constitution:

Now, for the rest of the day, we're going to dress up as the Founding Mothers -- yes, Johnny, you have to wear the dress -- and discuss how mean our husbands were for not letting us vote."

To white Euro centric.

My state asembleyman put in legislation the students must read the Constitution, Bill of Rights and the Federalist Papers to graduate from high school.

On the floor of the California assembly a dem-law maker said "No one should be forced to read these facist documents".

Never became law - was stopped by the dem's that run our state.

Right on target... But you left out that the First Amendment also gives the right to ban religions like conservatism from the classroom.

Thanks for the ping.
I have mixed feelings on this.

While I obviously think that observing Constitution Day is a good thing, I'm not sure the government should be mandating that to schools.

Also, I shudder to think what twisted interpretation of it some aging 60's hippie teacher will be teaching.

Hope you've toned up, trimmed down, and moisturized. The scrutiny could be intense.

Oh, c'mon! Race has nothing to do with this. And as an American, I would throw out "Euro centric" anyway. Why? This is America, not Europe.

Instead of taking the racial angle, consider this. If students, of whatever background, studied and appreciated the Constitution, maybe what is being forced down their throats would be rejected. The Constitution is antithetical and anathema to socialism, so of course the powers that be want to either ignore it or water it down.

Race has nothing to do with this. Nothing.

Isn't it unconstitutional for the Federal govt. to dictate to the States on education? Yeah, I thought so....

Another interesting point in the article:

The federal law championed by Byrd also affects all federal agencies. They will have to train new employees about the Constitution during orientation and train all employees about the document every Sept. 17. The Office of Personnel Management is expected to post guidelines in those areas soon.

Even if the agency is unconstitutional?
