I am looking for a scanned or posted picture of a cowboy.
This picture is particularly humorous sketch or pencilwork of a very tired, bedraggled and bearded cowboy shown full-face with his dirty hat & cigarette.
The caption reads:
"Thar's lots o'things they didn't tell me when I hired on with this outfit"

Look for the masthead of a column called "The Plainsman," written by Charles A. Guy, published for almost 50 years in newspapers in West Texas, and nearby places like Oklahoma and New Mexico. Best possible source, the website of the
Avalanche-Journal in Lubbock, Texas. Your description sounds like the cowboy at the head of that column all those years.

Sounds a lot like one of J. R. Williams "Out Our Way" cartoons from 50 or 60 years ago. To a small town Arizonan in those days, he was the best.

I believe I have seen that cartoon. I think it is Ace Reid. He had another that was perfect for my situation at the time which read: "Next time I hire on with an outfit, I'm gonna check the fences first."

I know exactly what you are looking for, my boss has it hanging in his office. I will look for the artist's
signature and ask him about it tomorrow.

In my best Max Smart voice.....would you settle for a crying Indian?
To: Ramonan
Thanks for this link. It led me a page of Harper's Weekly showing a line drawing of the Civil War steamer "Sultana" as it is sinking, aflame. I am currently working with a film-maker who is doing the story of the Sultana. We've worked the past three summers with Civil War re-enacters on sets which he built in his back yard. There's been lots of fire and blood, and this summer we'll blow up and burn one of the scale models which have been built. We'll also torch the main set since most of the before-explosion scenes have been filmed. These scanned images of Harper's Weekly will be great assets for further research.

Actually, I believe if you check into that individuals background, you'll find this is a picture of a 'Crying Italian Masquarading as an Indian'.
