GARDEN GROVE An event honoring an anti-illegal immigrant leader tonight was marred by altercations between anti-immigration activists and protesters, resulting in an arrest when two demonstrators were hit by a slow-moving van.
The driver was Hal Netkin of Van Nuys, said Barbara Coe, chairwoman of the California Coalition for Immigration Reform.
Protesters were blocking a driveway when Netkin tried to drive through and knocked two demonstrators to the ground, Deputy Police Chief K.J. Raney said.
Netkin was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon. At least one of the protesters was hospitalized.
"Knowing (Netkin), he panicked," Coe said.
Billy Hall, a member of Coes group, said shortly afterward that his car window was broken by a protester. Hall said he filed a police report.
The event sponsored by Coes group honored Aliso Viejo resident Jim Gilchrist. Gilchrists Minuteman Project last month attracted nearly 900 people to patrol a stretch of Arizona border in an effort to stop entry by illegal immigrants. The effort was praised by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger but condemned by President George W. Bush, who called the volunteers "vigilantes."
"Im damned proud to be a vigilante," Gilchrist told the 150 people assembled at the Garden Grove Womens Club. "How about you?"
He received a rousing ovation. He also said that deporting the millions of people in the country illegally would lower home prices, reduce traffic congestion and lower taxes.
Nearly 100 protesters picketed and chanted on the sidewalk. One sign read, "Beat Back the Racist Attack."
"Their racist acts are being masked by patriotism," said Obed Sanchez of Garden Grove. "To say illegal immigrants are coming over here and ruining our lives is ridiculous. We need immigrants like a tree needs water. Even President Bush recognizes that."

I think they give weather reports right now to illegals so they know better when it is safer to cross and take American jobs.
I don't know who this Martin is, but the OC Register as a real newspaper that is often not biased and just reports the news.
This is disappointing.
Wrong. For years they said 2 - 3 million, tops. The government kept downplaying it for a variety of reasons, none good.
It's probably more like 15 million. Headed for 50 million.
Figure it this way: Mexico's social and political institutions can't support any more than about 35 - 40 million in any kind of reasonable comfort. Those people will live in a country essentially trapped, technologically, in about 1940. Their country is always between 50 and 100 years behind, depending on the social sector you look at.
But the problem is that they have over 100 million. 120 million if you count the overflow here. So about half their population is marginalized - so what can they do?
1. Social change for the better -- never happen, at least not peacefully. Mexican upper class will not stand for it.
2. They leave, come to the U.S. -- Two problems solved for Mexican upper class: revolutionary threat and lack of influence over U.S. politics. They get the latter because the emigre's still have emotional attachment to overtures from SOB's they left behind.
That's the reality. Over 10 million, tens of millions yet to come....unless they get stopped.
And if they don't get stopped, your kids ain't gonna live in the U. S. of A.
And the roots are beginning to rot. Too much water will kill any plant!
There are 193 countries in the world. Only one tolerates illegal immigration. How is it that the other 192 get by?
If some dirty protester ever sat down in front of my car, it would be the last car they ever saw. --- George Wallace (quoting from memory, may not be exact)
They aren't the hated United States of America?
Costa Rica is now 20% Nicaraguan thanks to tolerance of illegal immigration. Thailand has a huge population of illegal Burmese, Japan has a sizeable illegal Korean and Philipino population, and certain countries in Europe similarly have problems. A major issue in the US is that we are a wealthy country bordered by a very poor country, so the sheer number of illegals is much larger.
Seems like I remember the high numbers in old CIS/FAIR reports. Don't have time to dig them up and I could be wrong. But I have NEVER heard anything as low (and laughable) as "2 - 3 million, tops".
Well, CIS or FAIR would have been telling the truth. I was referring to press releases from our various Ministries of Propaganda in Washingtoon and other dens of iniquity.
BTTT to find later.
Judging from this reporting, I can imagine how biased the reporting will be this weekend.
You should have freepmail from me
Exactly, he had to be over 70 years old. The two people on the ground were not injured, and just laid there crying racism. They did not even want to be interupted by the paramedics while they were talking to the cameras. It was disgusting attempt to make the old guy a racist. The protesters were throwing cans and bottles at police, and broke several windows.
It was clear who the bad guys were here.
Same thing we heard.
Actually it was marbles. I don't think the pain would be much different if struck by one though.
Marbles would be lighter, so that would be better, though could still kill.
BUMP!
