MSNBC: Frist Issues New Warning On Filibusters
MSNBC ^ | May 24, 2005 | Tom Curry

In the afterglow of the bipartisan accord announced Monday night to avert a Senate showdown on changing the filibuster rule, Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist emphasized Tuesday that he wasn’t a party to the deal and would quickly try to implement the rule change if Democrats resumed use of the filibuster to derail President Bush’s judicial nominees.

Frist’s proposal, which he calls “the constitutional option,” and which his foes call “the nuclear option” would lower the threshold for ending Senate debate on a judicial nominee from 60 to 51.

Monday night’s bipartisan deal prevented a vote on Frist’s proposal, as seven GOP senators promised to vote against it.

“The constitutional option will be used if… mindless, irresponsible filibusters become the tool of choice for the Democrats,” Frist told reporters.

Thus Frist made it clear only 18 hours after the accord was announced just how brittle it was. It seemed that a decisive vote over filibusters of judicial nominees had only been deferred for a while.

One prominent Republican senator, George Allen of Virginia voiced his revulsion with the bipartisan accord Tuesday, calling it a “capitulation”

I really like Allen.

In light of recent events, I have to wonder if he can even be sure he has the votes in the case he ever does pull the trigger.

Frist just basically told the RINO's to go to hell on hannity. The first filibuster he pushes the button no matter what they agreed to.

Graham maintains that he'd vote for it if they break this deal (by filibustering a nominee without "extreme circumstances"), but I don't know what to think about him now...

Well...who cares about the votes. Frist can move to modify the senate rules and then fillibuster his own motion...

I guess

Put your money where your mouth is Frist.

Bring up the ones "left out" in the "deal."

When tehy are filibustered, invoke cloture.

Then, like any good leader would do, he would rally enough support among his own party to break the filibuster.

Unfortunately, If Allen or Frist would try to go nuclear, I'm sure RINO Senators like 'my conscience' VoinoBitch and 'Please invite me on Wolf Blitzer's show' Hagel will jump in on the side of Graham, McCain, and the Libs.

Graham is a liar and a cretin and he's just now vaguely realized what he did to himself.

Frist may not be much of an attack-dog (as if any U.S. Senate leader is), but anyone who doesn't think the Senate leadership is going to do whatever it takes to get Bush's nominees confirmed should remember the following two words:

1. Arlen
2. Specter

His absence from this group of RINOs should be recognized as a key indication of just how much influence the Bush administration has with these people, especially when you consider Specter's reputation as one of the most liberal members (Democrat or Republican) of the Senate.

RINOs will always be what they are, but when faced with a potential primary battle against a conservative Republican you can be sure that they will end up crawling to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue on their knees.

IMO Frist could have solved this problem a long time ago, when the Centrist RINO's didn't have enough time to think (not that they ever do) and called for a motion on the floor to invoke the Constitutional option.

Had he done that early, we wouldn't be talking about it now.

I can't really be upset with Frist. He was hamstrung.

McCain and his merry band of sellouts need to feel the wrath for this one.

Well, after listening to Senator Frist on Hannity's radio show, and now He is talking to Pickering....

I fear my first instincts were correct. This is a huge loss for the GOP in general, and for conservative aspirations in particular.

Reading between the lines (he couldn't bring himself to say so directly), Frist believes that McCain & co. not only stabbed him in the back, they really ursurped his power.

The more I think about it, I'm now thinking that the mentally unbalanced McCain and his cohorts are planning to position themselves as "moderates", and draw off the more centrist Dems and "wishy-washy" Repubs into a "new" political party.... Perot revisited, except the target is not to draw conservatives but "fence sitters".

McCain: Drop the Mc, call true conservatives Abel, and you get a perfect picture of what has happened out of the Bible.

Has ANYBODY explained just what constitutes, "extreme circumstances" yet?

This deal is for crappola and everyone knows it!
