ALBUQUERQUE (AP) -- Two off-duty state police officers were arrested after a run-in with on-duty Albuquerque police officers.
The state police officers allegedly got drunk at a downtown Albuquerque bar, flashed a badge, cursed at Albuquerque police and fought Albuquerque police officers as they were taken into custody.
Officer Thomas Morrissey, 30, is a patrolman assigned the Gallup district. He was charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. Officer Saul Canialis, 28, was arrested on a battery on a police officer charge. He is assigned to the Grants district.
Morrissey was released on his own recognizance by Bernalillo County Metropolitan Court personnel. Canialis was released after posting $5,000 bond.
Both officers have been placed on administrative duty until an internal investigation is completed.
''Once the investigation is complete, the department will take swift action that is warranted,'' said state police Lt. Jimmy Glascock.
Glascock said he doesn't believe the incident will hurt the relationship between state police and Albuquerque police.
The Albuquerque police officers were on routine foot patrol early Sunday morning when they heard someone yell ''APD (expletive),'' according to court records.
When they turned around, Morrissey was looking and them and said, ''yeah you heard me (expletive).''
The city officers said they asked Morrissey to keep it down or they would have to arrest him.
Morrissey then allegedly showed the officers his badge and said, ''Don't you get an attitude with me. I'm state, and you're only a city cop.''
Morrissey allegedly resisted and fought officers as they tried to arrest him. At that time, Canialis ''rushed'' one of the Albuquerque police officers and pushed him, according to court records.
Morrissey later told the arresting officer he was upset at Albuquerque police because of an encounter earlier that night.
Albuquerque police and state police said they didn't know what Morrissey was talking about.
''Other than alcohol, we don't have an idea why they did this,'' Albuquerque police spokesman John Walsh said.
Here's a good one
Lt. Glascock? What a riot.
Thank you sir, may I have another...
Don't lose two good officers to what is politically correct.
Give them some kind of demeaning extra duty to let them know they have a deeper comittment to their sworn duty which always supercedes all choices to satisfy selfish desires.
In other words get a life, grow up and be responsible to your sworn oath!
L'etat, c'est moi!
Well said.
If it wasn't for us Nuevo Mexicans, who'd you have to make you look good? :)
LOL!
Howdy, Slim!
I wonder how this is going to play out?
The state cops jurisdiction trumps the city cops, but the fact the state cops were drunk in a definite violation.
Veeeery interesting to see what happens!
(Besides everybody concerned getting their wee wee slapped and the whole thing disappearing under the rug :)
Well, these guys are in a world of hurt for bad timing. The NMSP just settled with a former officer who was tied to a tree, maced, and taunted by several other officers in 2000. It got a lot of media attention.
To save you the unbearable suspense, paragraph 2, word 7.
"Yea, but you you're in my city now."
(sigh)
I know there are good cops, but there are still WAY too many cops who have no business running around with a badge and a gun!
It's because of that evil, awful highway 666 that runs through Gallup.
Maybe they've seen the movie "Super Troopers" one too many times.
Kinda shows their attitude.
The headline is a bit ambiguous. Are these State Highway Construction Zone patrolmen or Las Cruces University Police?
"Boys will be boys."?
They are not boys. They are men, and we want our officers to conduct themselves as such.
And how do you know they're "good officers"? Being an officer doesn't automatically make you good. It would seem to me that they are not. The article doesn't even tell us whether or not they were intoxicated at the time.
The officers, among other things, are required to keep the peace. And yet, they were the ones creating a disturbance, which also involved an altercation with police officers. No respect for the "badge".
Would I want those officers in my neighborhood? No. I say fire them. They don't deserve to wear a uniform.
Bingo.
