MEMORIAL DAY....it's NOT a 3 day weekend.
It IS about saying "Thank You" to all the Heroes that exist among us....most never recognized.
This MEMORIAL DAY....bake a plate of Chocolate Chip Cookies...and take it to the Veterans Hospital...and 'pass it on'.

p.s....and as soon as my wife reads this...she will know why everytime I don't feel well...I want to eat chocolate chip cookies and lemonade....and why it makes me feel just a little better.

Please consider reading "We Band Of Angels", a non-fiction book about the women who fell into Japanese hands on Correigedor. It is inspiring. By the way, my husband's uncle was one of those on Correigedor when it fell. He never made it home.

A breathtaking story Redrock. I have tears in my eyes. I will remember your story to my boys as well. Perhaps I should start looking for such a little old lady for them. Now I understand that It will make their life sweeter if I do find her.

Macy's, Sears, Penney's, Kohls et al would have us believe that Memorial Day was designed to have Bargain Day at the department store.
I'll take a pass on shopping and instead Honor the Fallen.
Thanks for the GREAT story.

PS... The American Hero in your story reminds me of the heroine in one of my favorite novels....A Town Called Alice.

Outstanding! I try to teach my kids that they live surrounded by heroes and that is why 'Yes, Mam and Yes, Sir"
are the only appropriate responses or acknowledgements for their elders and betters. Especially those in their seventies and eighties who survived childhood in the Depression,CCC camps, WWII, the fight for the eight hour day and collective bargaining, the hell of Korea, the loss of sons and daughters in Vietnam, and new Century. God Bless them all!

I can just see it now....sometime today, I'm going to get some chocolate chip cookies and lemonade and sit wondering in awe about the character of a woman who volunteers to go into a war zone as a combat nurse.
Heroes are what we know we ought to be, they make us wonder what we can be, and they bring us to summon the best from ourselves.
