Poll: Byrd Vulnerable in 2006
NewsMax ^ | 5/22/05 | Carl Limbacher

A poll commissioned by the National Republican Senate Campaign Committee shows that Sen. Robert Byrd could be facing a close reelection race in his home state of West Virginia, where he'll be seeking an unprecedented ninth term next year.

The poll shows Byrd in the lead, but not by much - with prospective GOP candidate, Rep. Shelley Moore Capito closing to within 10 points - 52 to 42 percent.

For a Democratic icon like Byrd, that's too close for comfort.

More troubling still for the top Democrat: Moore Capito's stellar performance comes despite the fact the she's has yet to announce her candidacy.

According to the Hotline: "Byrd has become a Republican target 'not just for his gadfly stance against the Bush administration' but also for 'his penchant for pork barrel politicking,' his age, and his history with the KKK."

One sign that Democrats are suddenly worried about Byrd's Klan past: They've recruited Barack Obama, the Senate's lone black member, to help remove the stain from the parliamentary wizard's robes.

But even with Obama's help, Byrd is no shoe in. Veteran political analyst Stuart Rothenberg said this week that if Moore Capito decides to run, she has a real shot at defeating the Democrat dragon.

"She represents a third of the state," he told CNN. "She's the daughter of former Governor Arch Moore, well-known figure in the state. She's proven to be a terrific politician. The contrast in age and style, Republicans think, give this an opportunity for one of those upsets"

Warns Rothenberg: "If the Republicans get Shelley Moore Capito, watch out."

If the GOP can locate a picture of Byrd in a Klan robe and use it in ads, Byrd will be finished.

It's time for Senator Byrd to retire. He'll be 89 at election day, and it's just simply time to retire and let someone new take his place.

Doubtful that dems care what evils are committed by their heroes.

Also doubt that Byrd will run again.

Seriously, how hard should it be to defeat an unremorseful ex-Klansman?

I doubt Byrd will run for re-election. He's already well into his 80's, and many folks from WV are starting to see him for what he is; a senile, doddering old fool....

In fact, it was a surprise he ran in 2000...

This Klansman's been vulnerable to the Grim Reaper for years and years, yet he wobbles on spouting his gibberish.

How do I put this...

He's not in the greatest of health, either. Neither should Ted Kennedy abandon his personal health care package, just to save a couple of dollars.

Reality, it's time to replace the commie stoolie obstructionist with a Republican with a bonafide spine. Byrd already looks as if death has claimed his dried up husk of a body. NSNR

Also doubt that Byrd will run again.

Why? There's already a precedent for a senator staying till his 100th birthday.

Most of us West Virginians don't believe Shelley is interested in a run for Senate. Hiram Lewis, an attorney and Iraq veteran, has declared, though. I like him, but thought he was an uninspired campaigner when he ran for state AG. If he can work on his campaigning and public speaking skills, and harp on Byrdbrain's KKK past and the old doofus' anti-freedom blathering, more power to him.

All the Republicans have to do to clinch this is to yield their time in every floor debate to Byrd. His senile ravings are the best pro-GOP campaign material that can be had.

Not only will Byrd run, there's a good chance he'd be reelected even if he died six months before the election. They could just embalm him and prop him up to take the oath of office.

To know West Virginians is to want to smack some sense into them. Most think the old fool really has done something of value for this state, and he has near-diety status here.

I think any wizard-like character with a hood over his face should do nicely. You really only need to see the eyes. As uniquely stupid as Byrd sounds most days, one pair of eyes looks remarkably similar to another pair.

I don't think Byrd needs a good doctor for the campaign trail so much as he needs a good taxidermist.

You are acting under the assumption that the average voter is as interested in politics as we are, but they're not. The average West Virginia voter has no idea about Byrd's senile rants, what they do see is all of the pork-barrel money he brings to the state. But something spectacular like Klan pictures would get their attention.

We could get a two-fer here. It may be more important to get Obama involved in a close race. Anything we can do to demonstrate him for the political hack that he is will be useful. Byrd is on the way out. Let the Dems link their rising star with "Sheets" to demonstrate that he really doesa not relate to the American blacks and their needs.

West Virginia saved the republic in 2000, along with Arkansas and Tennessee. They know longer vote for any Democrat they see. Their rural values are starting to seep into elections.

"Sheets" could have a rough go. He's that stupid and senile.
