As a group of residents cheered, a Glen Park man tackled Gary Patrolman Carl Cochran, choking the officer and threatening to kill him in an unprovoked attack Wednesday night, Lt. Roger Smith said.
Cochran, a five-year veteran and member of the departments elite S.W.A.T. team, suffered cuts to his face and injuries to his arm and back as a result of the protracted struggle with Kelvin D. Banks, 40.
Cmdr. Jerome Krebes said Thursday he ordered additional patrols in the area in response to the incident.
A small group of people ten or less surrounded the officer during the struggle as Banks wrestled with the officer and tried to grab Cochrans gun.
Cochran grabbed his wrist to stop him while Banks kept one hand on his throat and Banks said, 'I could kill you right now if I wanted to! . . . Cochran reported he could not reach his portable radio, the police report states.
Banks was charged Thursday in Lake Superior Court in Crown Point with battery, resisting law enforcement, intimidation and disorderly conduct and faces up to three years in prison if convicted of the charges, Diane Poulton, spokeswoman for Prosecutor Bernard Carter, said.
Patrolman Richard Knight arrived at 5000 Washington St. to assist Cochran at a domestic dispute and saw his partner struggling with Banks.
Both men were on the ground and a group of residents were crowded around urging Banks to keep up the attack, Smith said. Eventually, Knight and Cochran subdued Banks, who continued to defy officers after he was handcuffed and being led to the squad car, police said

But, we can build it cheaper in China! /sarcasm off
Just like Compton/SouthCentral Los Angeles.
If the police shoot to protect themselves (it has happened 3 or 4 times in the last few months), race pimp Jackson and Sharpton show up and the cops end up apologizing.
They don't like cops? Don't give them any. When they are attacked by a crazy in a stolen car trying to run them down or a home invasion robbery or a mugging, call Jesse Jackson.
That's really tough work emotionally. You guys deserve more credit than you get.
I could never be a Cop. Unless it was like Andy Griffith pouring out beer and extinguishing joints, threatening kids with the deadly force of informing parents.
What policemen did (and do) I rarely question. And although I'm a neophyte on FR, I have yet to see FReeper put down a Cop. I'm stunned you believe that anyone here would criticize your actions or the original post.
I would have shot the man as well as the most aggressive onlookers immediately... especially if there were other officers present. There's no way in hell I'd let them pose a current or possible future threat.
Of course then I'd be condemned by arm chair QB's and thrown in the slammer... like I said - I could never be a Cop.
Thanks for all you have done... will do... and continue to do. I could never fill your shoes.

Sadly, this story reminds me of when my partner made a routine traffic stop and was attacked and shot with his own gun.His bullet proof vest saved his life but he is paralyzed for life.
One good note...the perp was killed by the SWAT team so at least the tax payers didn't have to pay for a trial and incarceration. Sometimes there is JUSTICE.
Would have saved a lot of court costs and taxpayer dollars if you had shot the pervert! Good on ya for the excellent work.
What an incredible story. Glad you made it. What exactly did you do to knock the guy out?
Even Islamofascists from Fallujah would avoid that hellhole.
Take a look around. It's fast becoming one.
People are flooding into the country not to assimilate but to form their own little satellite country inside ours.
They use our own laws against us and set up their own mini-governments with it's laws and ordnances both written and unwritten.
Then you have the criminal gangs flooding in as some Freepers have mentioned, setting up their kingdoms and enclaves.
It's like the old joke, "How do you eat an elephant?" "One bite at a time."
This is what is taking place with our country and I for one do not believe it is an accident.
A lot these people are not coming coming here to be part of America but to take part of America.
It doesn't matter how much training you have there are some bad people out there. I am sure the keyboard rambos here could have handled the situation easily but the rest of us we might have been in trouble.
Those if you in the know are going to have to educate those of us who aren't, about Gary Indiana. To most of us, Gary Indiana is that sweet place where Ron Howard and Robert Preston were in the Music Man.
Sounds like he held his own. It's some kind of hollywood fantasy myth where the good guys easily win all the hand to hand. Truth is that the average cop is way beyond his physical prime, and the average thug is right there in those primo 18-25 years. At 41, I realize that I'm no nowhere near the fighter I was at 21.
Amazing story. Glad you're still here!
I hate to see magnificent old buildings like those (NOT the Steel City Cafe!) falling into ruins. Having said that, I wouldn't go through Gary, IN, or most other "inner city areas", unless, as Archie Bunker said, "I drove a Tiger tank and could swear in German".
Yeah. . .my wife is too.
