Washington state company to create methane gas from cow manure

TUKWILA, WA, United States (UPI) -- The U.S. government has given a Washington state company $8 million to create methane gas from cow manure and trash.

Prometheus Energy Co., which got the grant from the Agriculture and Energy departments, is developing a new technology that transforms the methane produced at landfills, cow pastures and coal mines into a substitute for diesel fuel, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer reported Friday

"What we do is take pollution and turn it into energy," said a Prometheus spokesman. "We take waste gases ... and through a freezing process turn that into liquid natural gas."

Liquid natural gas is cleaner than other fuels because the freezing process removes carbon dioxide, sulfur and other chemicals, he said.

"What we do is take pollution and turn it into energy,"

This dilemma on how to convert waste into energy could have easily been solved by adding a combination of pollutants: Kennedy + Byrd + Boxer + Reid. This mixture could have produced enough gas to light up the northern skies for a year.

That explains why normally rational people like Lindsey Graham get to the Senate and turn into RINO's. They're breathing all that swamp gas!

If you can do it, do it. Without sucking on the taxpayer tit - otherwise, go the hell away!

Too late; the party of "limited government" has assured this guy he can piss away eight million taxpayer dollars. To start with.

Well, it was either the gas, or she's missing a spine and a dose of integrity.

There is a large landfill in south Seattle, near Sea-Tac airport, that I used to live near.

At night, fishing in the valley on the downhill side, I could look up and see the pipes... dozens, maybe a hundred of them, probably 8 in. diameter pipes that stick out of the ground about ten feet.

Nuthin but pure, blue flame shooting out the top, no doubt hundreds of thousands of cubic feet of gas coming out every year.

Did they ever tap it? I've seen landfills produce power before from the methane.

Nope. They just let it burn as it comes out the pipes.

IIRC, a few years back some of the gas seeped into some poor suckers basement. Well, it was his basement until his furnace clicken on.
Now it's his swimming pool.

I lived in the Bay Area when they built Shoreline Amphitheatre on top of a landfill in the 80s.

Until they did a major fix, you could often use a lighter to ignite the gas coming up out of the grass at your feet.

Made the Grateful Dead shows even more fun.

The waste treatment plant in the area that I live, years ago had this pipe sticking out of the ground and there was this flame burning 24/7 for years.
Just think ? instead of having this flame burning in the air for years, it could have been saved, and turned into LNG or some kind of stream generator.

Well, why can't we just dig a big hole, fill it up with wood scraps, sawdust, high cellulose stuff, chuch in some methane producing bacteria, cover it up and let it brew?

If there ever is a WWIII, I want to own a landfill then. You'd be a rich man.

Wow, if this company can make methane out of cow manure and trash they can camp of the Washington State capitol steps and strike the mother lode.
