"Star Wars: Episode III -- Revenge of the Sith" scored $50 million in first-day receipts at 3,661 theaters across the nation on Thursday, box-office tracker Exhibitor Relations said Friday. The take handily beats the one-day record of $44.8 million set last year by "Shrek 2." "Sith" is distributed by News Corp.'s (NWS) 20th Century Fox film unit.

Fox doesn't have their logo on it for fun. They laid down some money to get that and will be getting plenty more money back. I read that Fox gets $50 million to cover distribution costs and Georgie gets the rest.

that was Lucas' original plan. Unfortunately, the $50M will just encourage him. On the other hand, since he's move into a PG-13, I expect the nexet set will be R or even X. I was disappointed that Lucas cut the sex scenes between Yoda and Natalie.

No, the average ticket price today in the U.S. is $6.40. Even adjusted for inflation ROTS would still crush the openings of TPM, Spiderman, and Matrix Reloaded.

Belongs to the ages, or belongs to the ashes?

Thanks...since this 50 million figure is only the US and maybe Canada the rest of the world isn't even being counted but I would guess its pretty large as well. Probably well north of 100 million for opening day.

"$6.40."
where? In colorado, theaters go for at least $8, with our local being $9.50 and $1 service charge per ticket if not bought at the window.
