"Star Wars: Episode III -- Revenge of the Sith" scored $50 million in first-day receipts at 3,661 theaters across the nation on Thursday, box-office tracker Exhibitor Relations said Friday. The take handily beats the one-day record of $44.8 million set last year by "Shrek 2." "Sith" is distributed by News Corp.'s (NWS) 20th Century Fox film unit.

It's a damn good movie. I loved it, and will see it plenty more times.

Even taking into account the over optimistic counts the studios always put out, this is a big number.

Shrek 2?

It's surprising that a sequal to a kid's film would hold that record.

Did you every think it might have been them monitoring one of the employees who was breathing on the food?

Saw it at 630 am on Thursday-- boss bought the tickets and several of us went.

It was a really decent wrap up to the series-- and a fine movie to boot. I recommend it.

Best part was seeing all the 5 foot tall Darth Vaders and greasy haired Jedi Knights coming out of the 3 am show.

The highest grossing films these days are always kids films.

The rumor I'm hearing is that there will be three more... same thing I heard around the time the third in the first batch opened.

I took the kids to see this new one today. I noticed it was very long. It was okay. But that Anakin kid is a horrid actor. Lots of light saber action and such, flying spacecrafts, Yoda, Wookies.

they had the Darth Vader breathing going over the intercom system..

Try it in an anonymous phone call, and see how far it gets you.
