RUSH: Let me give you the headline to this story: "American Optimism Stuns Pollsters." That's the headline to the story. "A landmark study released yesterday from a New Jersey medical [skrool] finds that the majority of us are overwhelmingly optimistic about our future, even if catastrophe looms on the horizon. A sample: Eighty-two percent of Americans aged 18 to 24 feel optimistic about their futures. Eighty-two percent of those 25 to 44 do so well. Seventy-five percent of those aged 45 to 64 and 64% of those 65 or older agree. Only 15% to 22% of the respondents say that they've grown more pessimistic over the past five years. The public's response flabbergasted the pollsters." (Italics added)

"'What amazed us most was their determined optimism even as they showed great concern about bad things happening in the world,' said Dr. Donald Luria of the department of preventive medicine and community health at the New Jersey Medical School in Newark, which conducted the study." Guy lives in Newark? No wonder he has a pessimistic... "The study of 2,000 adults in four distinct age-groups was conducted for the school by McLaughlin & Associates throughout April. Not all the respondents are wearing rose-colored glasses, though. Between two-thirds and three-quarters of those in all age-groups fear the US will suffer a biological or nuclear attack in the next 23 -- 20 years. Greenhouse gases and holes in the ozone layer don't cause much concern. The survey reveals that roughly one-third consider global warming a major problem, though, the number increases among college educated respondents." That may be right, but that doesn't scare me or impress me.

Look it, this has got to stun these people. It has to be devastating. Here you've got the Democrats, you've got Dingy Harry portraying America as a land of soup lines, people canceling vacations, gasoline prices going through the roof, Cheney and Bush getting rich holding hands with Saudi princes! And yet here comes the poll: 82% are optimistic. Now, let's assume that's a little high. No! Let's take it at face value, as we take every other poll at face value. Let's take this at face value. 82% are optimistic. Let me just ask you this. Do you think the way the Democrats are going about things is going to get to these people? Do you think 82% of the American people who feel optimistic about their futures are going to be influenced by the Democrats? There's no way, folks. I'm telling you. You've gotta trust me on this. These people are so out of touch, the Democrats are, that it is striking. Because these are the people we always were told had their finger to the pulse. They knew what the American people were doing, focus groups and all this sort of thing. They have so lost touch that it is striking.

Now: "Respondents who deem religious faith very important to them were much more optimistic about their own and the world's future compared to those who listed religion as unimportant." Well, I tend to believe that. There's a political party here that stresses the unimportance of religion -- and who are they? They're the biggest doom and gloomer pessimists that you have seen come down the pike in a long time! No wonder religion frightens them. See, liberalism relies on pessimism, folks. You wonder why the Democrats can't be optimistic? It goes against the grain of liberalism. Liberalism looks out over aaaaaall that is and sees nothing good. No, let me take that back. I'm going to take that back. Liberalism gazes out over all that is, and what do they see? Soup lines, poverty, rising gas prices -- and they see opportunity! They see opportunity. They see potential voters. They want to exploit those circumstances and tell people it's the fault of Bush and Republicans and conservatives.

So the more people in pain, the more people they think are suffering, the greater chance the Democrats think they have. It's warped, but that's the way they view the world. When they see people happy, they're threatened. Happy people don't need liberals. Optimistic people don't need liberals -- and optimistic people who believe in God and are religious, oh! That's a real threat. Because, you know, it's not the militant Islamic terrorists that threaten America, folks. No, no, no, no, no. No-o-o-o. To the left in this country the real threat, the real threat is Christianity. That's the real threat -- and so when they see this (gasp). I guarantee you. I'm just telling you. They have never been more out of touch, and they're slowly and surely starting to realize it. They don't know what to do about it, and are literally panicked.

Since FDR, U.S. Socialisim has been locked into the notion that economic forces are the enemy. However, most folks have found that as their standard of living improves with each year and generation, that economic opportunity, personal liberty, consumerisim and freedom actually go together. It is increasingly becoming locked into the American Psyche and culture.

Except for the Clintonista's, the dems have not yet figured out how to pull off the magic trick of making their vision jive with the increasingly obvious.
