Why Islam is disrespected
Boston Globe ^ | May 19, 2005 | Jeff Jacoby

Posted on 05/19/2005 5:50:50 AM PDT by veronica

IT WAS front-page news this week when Newsweek retracted a report claiming that a US interrogator in Guantanamo had flushed a copy of the Koran down a toilet. Everywhere it was noted that Newsweek's story had sparked widespread Muslim rioting, in which at least 17 people were killed. But there was no mention of deadly protests triggered in recent years by comparable acts of desecration against other religions.

No one recalled, for example, that American Catholics lashed out in violent rampages in 1989, after photographer Andres Serrano's ''Piss Christ" -- a photograph of a crucifix submerged in urine -- was included in an exhibition subsidized by the National Endowment for the Arts. Or that they rioted in 1992 when singer Sinead O'Connor, appearing on ''Saturday Night Live," ripped up a photograph of Pope John Paul II.

There was no reminder that Jewish communities erupted in lethal violence in 2000, after Arabs demolished Joseph's Tomb, torching the ancient shrine and murdering a young rabbi who tried to save a Torah. And nobody noted that Buddhists went on a killing spree in 2001 in response to the destruction of two priceless, 1,500-year-old statues of Buddha by the Taliban government in Afghanistan.

[[No one recalled, for example, that American Catholics lashed out in violent rampages in 1989, after photographer Andres Serrano's ''Piss Christ"]]

What violent rampage? How many people died? If you are trying to draw some type of moral equivalency between these two events, then you are insane.

The fourth paragraph of the article:

"Of course, there was a good reason all these bloody protests went unremembered in the coverage of the Newsweek affair: They never occurred."

Islam is not a religion. It is a terrorist organization working under the cover of a religious shield. Until enough people wake up to this fact, we will lose the war on terror.

I watched Fox News with disgust this morning as Rumsfeld and Myers were expressing their outrage that Zarqawi had released a tape stating that it was okay to kill muslims while killing infidels. They seemed more outraged that muslims were killing muslims than that muslims were killing members of other religions. It is as if they didn't want to offend muslims by showing outrage at the fact that muslims were killing Christians and Jews. Quite frankly, I'm sick of this coddling of islam that spews forth from our government, all the way from the top down. George Bush is as guilty as any with his "Islam, the religion of peace", "Peaceful muslims", "Moderate muslims" and (the worst of all) "muslim-Americans" lines of BS. There are no "muslim-Americans". There are muslims in America and there are muslims that are American citizens. But a muslims first and strongest allegiance is to islam. And islam teaches the conquering of the world and its conversion to islam by threats and acts of murder.

In I Samuel 15, King Saul is told to kill all of the Amalekites, and it's his failure to kill them all that causes the Lord to reject Saul and send Samuel to anoint David. Of course that's not in the Torah and isn't presented as a general rule for dealing with all non-Israelites.

I know a "former muslim" Who is in iraq from iraq working with american troops.... It was from seeing the terrorists acts and a few other reasons .. He is now a atheist.... He has seen islam first hand in his own country and realized this was true islam.. and he ran from it..... He enjoys working with american troops from what he said they are very kind and gracious people :)

Sorry. I expected crap from the Globe.

************

Generally a correct assumption. George Will and Jeff Jacoby are exceptions to the typical Leftist Boston Globe offerings.

I've never seen a version of the Ten Commandments which has the commandment against murder as #4. The reckoning followed by Catholics and some others has "Thou shalt not kill" as the 5th commandment; most Protestants have it as the 6th.

The Septuagint version of Exodus has "Thou shalt not murder" (ou phoneuseis) in the 8th spot, after "Thou shalt not steal" (20:15).

The media if focused on New York and Washington where the elite social scene is. They resent having to cover anything else. That's the real problem with Newsweek. Who would expect any sensitivity to Muslims in Afghanistan in a skyscraper in NYC. After all, they keep repeating the same simplistic refrain about how the people in Iraq are Shiite, Sunni, and Kurd and haven't gone beyond that in three years.

I thought it was no. four, but if I am wrong (and probably am), I will gladly accept the correction. My point wasn't so much it's place in the Big Ten, but rather that we have it and they don't.

Yes, they behave like defensive, insecure adolescents. What does that tell you about the comforts of their faith?

I would assume the term "context" has no meaning to the reporters working for this RAG!

More people were injured in 2003's "peace" protests by the antisemetic-anarchist-socialists in SF/DC than at any "Catholic" rallies.

The BIG controversy over Serano's blasphemous scatological work of "art" is that US tax dollars paid for it. The secular left, which decries any public dollars going to anything Christian did not denounce this expenditure. They defended it from the likes of Jesse Helms.

The agents of "Newsspeak" will have to try harder to rewrite the past. I have not been brainwashed yet.

Excellent article which articulates the hypocricy and insanity that is Islam today. Newsweek should have known better, but the very fact that people are making that statement, and know that rioting by religious zealots would be the outcome, illustrates that everyone knows Islam has gone off the deep end, though they will not say it outright. This author makes an excellent point. Newsweek is clearly culpible, but let's look at the larger picture and what the REAL problem here is. One word-Islam.

How many of the cited incidents in this idiotorial were hoaxes like the Newsweak report?

The question that remains (as with the CBS memos), did the news agent CARE if the story was true or not? The assumption was there and the report was designed to weaken morale and keep the region unstable. Same with CBS trying to smear the Bush campaign and cost him the election. Truth is not necessary to accomplish their goals.
