Can I ask which ISP you're using?

When you first set up a profile in Tbird, it doesn't ask you for the password, just the username. Then, the first time you try sending/receiving mail, it prompts you for the password for the mailserver. Do you not remember the password for the profile or something? Have you tried logging in to the Adelphia webmail page and resetting the password for the profile you're trying to set up?

I installed Thunderbird on a laptop a few days ago (normally use Evolution) and it is working well. This doesn't sound like it has anything to do with the client program.
Remember that your ISP password and your POP3 email password may be two different things. I have accidentally substituted one for the other until I realized the mistake. Also look into whether your POP3 server requires some special authentication option.

Firefox is the browser client. Thunderbird is the email client. Apples and Oranges.

Maybe you will find something by googling thunderbird + email + password? I wish there was a book to help me with Thunderbird, too.
