I installed Thunderbird on a laptop a few days ago (normally use Evolution) and it is working well. This doesn't sound like it has anything to do with the client program.
Remember that your ISP password and your POP3 email password may be two different things. I have accidentally substituted one for the other until I realized the mistake. Also look into whether your POP3 server requires some special authentication option.

Maybe you will find something by googling thunderbird + email + password? I wish there was a book to help me with Thunderbird, too.

I have downloaded Thunderbird. Amazing coincidence! I saw a guy downloading Thunderbird at Fifth and Main today!

You will use the same username and password as you did with your previous email account.

When I try to get mail it asks for my password Since TB did not ask for a password when setting up I use my paasword with my ISP to no avail. You might be able to call Adelphia support. They might be able to walk you through setting up Thunderbird to work with their system. (I don't recommend drinking the Thunderbird though, as some have implied!)
Another source of Thunderbird help is the FAQ. You might want to look through the stuff here: Thunderbird FAQ.
If you poked a couple of different passwords into the thing, you probably have the wrong info saved. You might have to delete the stored password and then enter the corrrect one. See the section in the FAQ that's titled "I changed my IMAP password, how do I get rid of a cached password?"
Hope you get it working. I didn't have any problems once I got the correct password into the thing!
