An Islamic civil rights group is launching a Koran giveaway -- a campaign intended to turn a "negative incident into something more positive," it said.
The Council on American-Islamic Relations planned to hold a Tuesday morning news conference to discuss details of its campaign to offer free Korans to the American public.
CAIR said its campaign is a direct response to the controversy generated by Newsweek magazine's May 9 article claiming that U.S. interrogators at Guantanamo Bay flushed a Koran down a toilet in an effort to "rattle" detainees.
Newsweek retracted the anonymously sourced story on Monday, after first admitting that parts of it were wrong.
CAIR said its campaign, called "Explore the Koran," involves the community-sponsored distribution of Islam's revealed text to Americans nationwide.
"It is our belief that greater access to Islam's holy book will help foster a better appreciation and understanding of Islam by ordinary Americans," said CAIR Executive Director Nihad Awad.
Last week, CAIR called on the Bush administration to launch a public probe of the Koran-flushing allegations..."
(I wonder if they have a PR version for Americans? .. otherwise ...)

Mr. Whipple Nearly Runs Out of Charmin December 31, 1995
CINCINNATI (AP) -- Mr. Whipple thought he had lost the roll of a lifetime.
Dick Wilson, the actor who spent 25 years exhorting shoppers to please not squeeze the Charmin, found himself with nothing to squeeze when his free lifetime supply of bathroom tissue inexplicably ended last month.
"They sent me a case or two every month. All of a sudden it just stopped, and I don't know why," Wilson, 79, said Friday in a telephone interview from Henderson, Nev. "I thought maybe I should write them a Happy Christmas card, because maybe they thought I was dead."
A spokesman for Procter & Gamble Co., the Cincinnati-based maker of Charmin, said the company was not aware of Wilson's paperless plight until it was mentioned in a story in Friday's USA Today.
Spokesman Mark Leaf said P&G is not sure why the shipments stopped, but he promised that they will resume immediately.
"It certainly was nothing intentional," he said. "He IS Mr. Whipple, and always will be Mr. Whipple, and certainly we want to make sure that nothing but Charmin goes in his bathroom."
Wilson, who last appeared in a Charmin commercial in 1990, is retired and lives with his wife in Nevada. He said he's still recognized almost daily as the mild-mannered, mustachioed grocer with bifocals and a bow tie.
"People say to me on the streets, `Hey, don't squeeze the Charmin,"' Wilson said. "I tell them, `Hey, you can squeeze whatever you want."'
can you put that "new improved goat smell product" in Mr. Whipple's hands before the hammer comes down on you?

Sweet, free toilet paper.
I wonder if it is squeezeably soft, too.
LOL!
PING. But a bit too late, I guess.
I KNOW 'niggardly' is not a racial term. I was just making fun of the black 'scholars' (as I called them) who think it IS a racial term. Also pointing out that Muslims are not too fond of black folks unless they are slaves.
I am not 100% sure about this quote:
Koran (9:11) - For it is written that a son of Arabia would awaken a
fearsome Eagle. The wrath of the Eagle would be felt throughout the lands of
Allah and lo, while some of the people trembled in despair still more
rejoiced; for the wrath of the Eagle cleansed the lands of Allah; and there
was peace.
OK, I checked, the above quote is 100% FALSE.
(It's still there.) Excellent! Says it all!!
I've got mine...Here's a handy tip. Strips of Bacon make Excellent bookmarks!
Great picture!!!!!!!!!! Love it!
Your using logic for people who do not.
As I said, no muslim respects or acknowledges the "edited" version.
Its like putting the bible in ebonics (I've seen that version, and its pretty bad).
Never the less, the media, will always quote from the edited, they do not dare cite the real thing.
And, like many, I know the truth of islam, from that day, from September 11th, 2001, that should have taught the world what islam is all about.
Please note: How many muslims actually call their religion, the religion of peace, its mostly white non-muslims.
When asked have you ever read the Quran.?.
The answer; Yes, I use the Quran daily, hopefully..
A good use for its ignoble verses!
