TBILISI, Georgia (AP) -- The FBI said Wednesday that a grenade thrown in the crowd during last week's speech by President Bush in the Georgian capital was capable of exploding and was considered a threat against the president. The statement by agent Bryan Paarmann contradicted initial reports by Georgian officials that the grenade was not capable of exploding and had been found on the ground. The grenade, wrapped in a dark handkerchief, fell about 100 feet from the podium where Bush was speaking May 10 and "simply failed to function," he said. "We consider this act to be a threat against the health and welfare of the president of the United States as well as the welfare of the multitudes of Georgian people who turned up for this event," Paarmann said. Bush spoke to tens of thousands of people in Freedom Square, a main plaza in Tbilisi. He offered strong support for Georgia's democratic development following the 2003 Rose Revolution. The crowd response was overwhelmingly favorable. No doubt that the person who had it really wanted to get within the kill radius of the president.
Thank God.
I'm actually surprised this doesn't happen more often. Even with security as tight as it is, it amazes me there aren't more close calls.
Whoa!
Prayers of gratitude, and may God keep our President safe from harm.
God Bless that Georgian Security Officer!
But God intervened! :o)
Thank You God!
God's hand?
scary thought!
Perhaps it did. Speculation by the Secret Service was that it was thrown, not dropped. Did they find hair & scalp stuck to it where it may have hit someone on the head?
No shiite.
Isn't there something on our money that says In God We Trust. I think we should keep it on our money.
Many people pray for our President every day...
Some of the prayers have been returned with interest...
I remember in the the 1990s a 13 year old kid started shooting people at school in Dallas. He got to one of female teachers, and the gun refused to work.
The gun just kept jamming on the kid. The police examined the gun later and said there was nothing wrong with it -- no explanation (on earth) for why the gun jammed.
Who says God has not chosen Bush to lead?
The first one would clear the area and possibly make Bush an easier target. It would be an error to think the grenade was the sole plan of attack.
Thank God for the level of Soviet munitions quality control.
You are correct. I was not thinking that way. I was thinking about injuries that would result from the grenade exploding. We may never know the entire story.
"The President's Guardian Angel is probably getting combat pay."
. . . I've thought this everyday since 9/11/01! [May God continue to bless and protect our courageous President!]
Would anybody here like to be standing unexposed when a grenade 100 feet away went off? One can easily throw a grenade 100 feet, but who would remain standing and exposed after doing it? Sure, the Probabilty of Kill is low, but it is certainly not "zero"!
