OTTAWA (CP) - They started off as a political golden couple, but wound up a wincing example of why you shouldn't date someone from work.
"Never dip your pen in the company ink," as one Conservative insider put it. With news reverberating around Parliament Hill of Belinda Stronach's blockbuster bolt from the Tories to the Liberals, the indelicate question was unavoidable: "What about Peter MacKay?"
Stronach's well-publicized romance with the Conservative deputy leader could hardly have come to a more stunning end.
Sources confirmed the pair are taking a "break" from the photogenic relationship first made public in January.
"Suffice it to say, I'm very happy and quite smitten," MacKay beamed at the time.
Tory insiders now say he was one of the last to know of Stronach's planned defection.
MacKay got the news early Tuesday and had the unhappy task of notifying Conservative Leader Stephen Harper.
"If he was smitten a few weeks ago, he's probably smoked today," said a party source.
Harper didn't get a call from Stronach herself until moments before she appeared at Prime Minister Paul Martin's side to make the jaw-dropping announcement.
Stronach would not discuss MacKay in detail, saying their relationship is a personal matter.
"I have a great deal of respect for Peter MacKay . . . and the contribution he's made to the growth of the Conservative party."
One of the few people not talking about the humiliating state of affairs was MacKay himself.
"No comment," said his spokesman Michael Bailey as MacKay holed up in his Centre Block office.
Bailey would not confirm when his boss would be making another public appearance. But he hinted that MacKay may stay cloistered until the crucial budget vote Thursday that could bring down the minority Liberals.
The high-profile MP from Nova Scotia is nursing a bruised heart, Harper suggested.
The Tory leader weighed in on Stronach's actions at a hastily called news conference.
"If she has such a high opinion of Peter MacKay, I would venture today after my discussion with him, she has an awfully tough way of conveying that to him.
"I think Peter's taking this pretty hard, as you can imagine."
Some MPs couldn't resist a giggle at MacKay's expense. Stronach's departure is a blow to him personally and to the Conservatives as they strive to appear election-ready.
The spurned MP appears to be "unlucky at love and unlucky at politics," said New Democrat Judy Wasylycia-Leis.
Hillary, look out. She's made two big moves to take your place.
Thanks ever so much for that disturbing mental image. I'm going to go shower now.
Here's a picture of Stronach with her new boyfriend.
One of the sleaziest greasy treacherous harlets in canadian political history ! ! !
Suffice it to say,she may have made a deal with the devil aka, socialist Liberal party, to prop this corrupt mafia-esque political party for the interim, but she will lose her seat in parliament. The socialist Liberals may survive the budget vote on may 20th and validate canada as a banana republic, but in the next election,if there is ever one,Stronach will lose her seat in parliament.Who`d vote for scum like that.
Unfortunately, most of her constituents owe their livelihood to her dad's company. She'll be the party's new Sheila Copps- a bimbo who keeps her job because she's got loads of cash and personal popularity behind her.
PING
I'm not sure, but I guess if we asked Carolyn Parrish's constituency, we might get an idea. :-(
Why has the United States succeeded in breaking the Easter Establishment barrier - under Goldwater - but Central Canadians still have a biased against anyone that is not from Ontario or Quebec?
I believe Canada is better off if the parliament never gets on doing anything. If it means no more money is wasted, the whole lot of them can go on permanent vacation.
I was no fan of Tequila Sheila but unlike BLIEnda she had some principles, GST not withstanding. Stronach has not shown any principle nor has she shown any personality; good or bad. She's an empty suit and her handlers have kept her from the press. So much so that even they don't think much of her. She may not lose her seat but she is destined to become a footnote in Canadian political history.
Me too- CFRB was lit up with PO'd voters. She'll probably have to parachute into another riding because it looks like she's toast at home.
Wow. Belinda merits the title of a "major league Clymer," in more ways than one.
I've always been impressed by Peter McKay--he seems intelligent and reasonable.
I officially hate my country.
In Canadian politics, a party is like religion or race - you are born into it. Liberla voers will vote for Liberals becasue that's who they've always voted for. Ignorant, useful idiots they are. Corruption - same for all politicians - it's a non issue to voters. Ends justify the means, scorched earth politics. People support the Liberals becasue the common good is being accomplished. The Belinda b!tch will be even more popuolar now. The editorials in the Globe and Mail praise this event. Disgusiting
