Say what you will about the former Speaker of the House, Newt Gingrich, demonized by the Democrats when Clinton was in office, the mans intellectual powers are impressive. It was, of course, Gingrich, along with former Rep. Dick Armey, who wrote the Contract with America that put the Republican Party in control of Congress in 1994.
The Contract, which virtually all of the then-GOP candidates signed, proposed some concrete solutions to problems. With Republicans in the majority, the welfare system was reformed, balanced budgets followed, and so did the first tax cuts in memory. There were rule changes in the way Congress conducted business. In sum, it was a dramatic response to the lethargy that characterized what forty years of Democrat control had produced.
Today, there is a major debate over the Democrat-inspired program, Social Security, with the realists telling us that this pay-as-you-go program will be bankrupt in the years ahead and calling for a revision that will allow workers to retain more of their own money for their retirement years. Gingrich says personal accounts will plow money back into the financial marketplace giving it a needed boost while insuring a higher retirement payoff.
In January, Gingrichs new book, "Winning the Future: A 21st Century Contract With America" ($27.95, Regnery) was published. Its the kind of book that policy wonks and political junkies like to read. Its also the kind of book that anyone entering the workplace, raising a family with kids in school, or concerned about the nations moral decline should read. . . . .

Too likely to serve a spouse with divorce papers in her hospital bed to be President.
I'm with you, and it pains me to say that.
Newton Gingrich said that in the presence of a Clinton he just "melts." Need read no further?
Trick question, right?
Newt was my man in '94, but he let us all down, and we should never forget it.
Evidently the MSM loves him now. It can only be because he has turned completely to the dark side.
He's a smart guy, but not the man I want as President. Way too many skeleton's in his closet. Then again most of his skeletons sit right there in the living room.
Newt is catering to the Washington establishment that HATED him - he should have worn their hatred as a badge of honor.
Newt has no stones.
And this is exactly what makes us different from the democrats. When our guys turn bad, when they lie, when they let us down, we stop supporting them. When they are no longer worthy of our support, we don't sacrifice our personal honor to keep them in power.
Tubby little hall monitors seldom do.
He's not even smart enough to keep his pants zipped. Like others we could name.
You can't take away from Newt's intellect but yes....too much baggage. Unfortunately we want our politicians to be warm and fuzzy. Both on the right and left...if they said what they really thought none of them would get elected. It's all about an image.
Republicans turned on him because his Contract forced them to actually stand for something and term limits put a sunset on the sweetest deal most of them will ever have in their lives.
With Newt being my former congressional representative, it's truly hurts to say that, but leadership is Job 1, and he lost his authority in 1998.
He could be a great advisor to someone who has the courage and decency to act on aggressive conservative principles.
Newt is too morally challenged.
Way too arrogant.
