news

Posted on 05/15/2005 6:41:17 PM PDT by djf

An extreme solar storm has happened, possibly disrupting communications and giving people a chance to see the auroras.

Just an FYI.

"A weak coronal hole stream became the dominant solar wind source during the last hours of the day"

Is that solar wind coming from that coronal hole?

There's been a few ash eruptions the last week or so. The observatory opened up again for the 25th anniversary.

I missed the original eruption, I was sleepin, but the guy downstairs heard a heck of a boom.

Way too late; it's long over. There's no storm going on at the moment.

The aurora was visible early in the morning incredibly far south..into the Southern US. I was clouded out in Maryland unfortunately.

I guess.

Wind coming from a hole, sounds like the sun is farting.

Art Bell has been kidnapped, and an alien has been put in his place. I don't trust aliens.

Possibly. But the sun rotates in like 11 hours or so, and the black holes and general solar surface magnetic anomalies aren't just gonna disappear overnight.

Beautiful.

The absolute best aurora I ever saw was from a tiny town in west Ontario called Dryden. Magnificent. Blues, huge red waves sweeping across the whole sky, wonderful greens.

I think it's starting to get pretty close to the magnetic north pole there.

The skeeters were killers, though.

Well, if you take a ride aboard Burt Rutan's spaceship, about half an hour.
