[Michael Medved]: W Bush-Whacked by 'Star Wars?'
NY Post ^ | 5/15/05 | Richard Johnson

'The Force' ins't with President George W. Bush, as least as far as George Lucas is concerned.

The blogosphere has been abuzz for days with reports that Episode III contains several barely concealed digs at the Bush Administration.

In a much cited scene, Ewan McGregors Obi Wan Kenobi decares, 'Only a Sith Lord deals in absolutes,' after Hayden Chirstensen's Ankin Skywalker/Darth Vader character says, 'If you're not with me, you're my enemy,' an obvious reference to President Bush's statements regarding the war on terror.

As the Senate cedes power to Palpatine under the guise of 'intergalatic security,' Natalie Portman's Princess Padme Amidala exclaims bitterly, 'So this is how liberty dies-to thunderous applause.'

No surprisingly, right wing leaning cineaste critic Michael Medved says George Lucas' script shows just how liberal Hollywood political sensibilities can infect a mass market fantasy like 'Revenge of the Sith'.

'What's striking about the Bush digs is not that they are that important to the film, but that they are so unimportant to it.'

None of this stuff is probably worth getting worked up over, but it's just another indication of the obvious and underlying partisanship of the entertainment industry coming out in places where you would least expect it.'

In an interview with the Associated Press last week, Lucas claimed has was less insipred by the current political climate than by the Nixon and Vietnam era, how the French turned their backs on democracy to support Napoleon and how the Romans did the same thing with Caesar.

No. I doubt the Jedi or the Sith knew of Democrats and Republicans. Can you take this quote more out of context?

When the term "Star Wars" was originally applied to Reagan's idea for a space shield, it was intended as a term of derision. When the Reagan administration picked it up and started using it as a positive, Lucas sued to make them stop.

He lost, btw.

I saw 'Kingdom' and walked out before the end, since it really wasn't historially accurate.

Well we know that evil wins at the end of this film cycle. Darth Vader and the Empire rule at the beginning of the whole series (1977).

Would be interesting to hear what the story arc was at one time for the final trilogy (things did not remain calm, obviously).

Maybe...maybe not...I haven't seen this new one. We do know Leia gets adopted by Jimmy Smits so its possible he has some royal house he belongs to on future ill fated Alderaan.

I have had a deep respect for Michale Medved and I still like him, but with greater exposure on his radio show I realize he's very attention getting and a bit too intent on being right all the time.

My insight into Michael was complete when he spent shows reading the deleted chapters from his book, detailing ad nauseum his high school days.

Wow, I haven't seen Jimmy Smits in a long time. He was a cutie when he started in "L.A. Law."

The left has been claiming that Bush=Hitler for years now, don't see why they wouldn't take the opportunity to claim that Bush=Vader now (especially because children have a better understanding of who Darth Vader is than they do Adolph Hitler).

The Loopy Leftist at our public library branch has a bumper sticker that says, "Frodo has failed - Bush has the Ring!"

We always have a chuckle because she's too addled to realize that Dick Cheney is the Dark Lord :-).

Actually, I SAW "Kingdom of Heaven", and I disagree with some on this forum. It was historically accurate portraying both Muslims & Crusaders.

Even if this is true, you'll notice that the Sith virtually eradicate the Jedi. So whatever "Force" Vader commands is, at the very least, considerable. And he wields it with great success.

Bush could be likened to worse than Darth Vader. At least no one's comparing him to Jar Jar.

There are books on how the final episodes ran (VII-IX). The big concept is that even though the evil emperor was killed, the entire imperial nation was not defeated. Democracy did not come. Luke restarts the Jedi Academy. The evil that the evil emperor held back is released (as well as many of his students). Its not as dramatic as episodes IV-VI.

I'm sorry, but Medved refuses to see that those who can do, those who can't, whine about it.

Medved, like most critics, has real issues.

Face it, as Mel Gibson proved with Passion, if you make it GOOD, people will go and see it.

And, as Left Behind proved, if you make it on the cheap, in 6 months, you can buy it out of the bargain DVD bin at Walmart for $5.99.

Seriously, all this whining about how the Hollywood Liberals are making movies against Conservatives is such hogwash. Don't like it? Write a GOOD Script, Go out and secure Representation (Writer's Agent) Get Finacial Backing, go through all the headaches and stress of Pre through Post Production, and get your opus Produced and distributed.

Now, don't forget to make certain that each and every member of your Cast and Crew is Lock Step Politically with everything you think ahead of time. That would include your Out of Company Vendors (Suppliers, EFX People, Catering, etc).

All the while realizing that for a movie to begin making a profit, a movie needs to make 3 times it's budget.

Face it, there is Conservative Money out there, and lot's of it. If you want "Conservative Movies" that rival the likes of Star Wars, then go make them.

Or, you can follow Medved's lead and spend years hobnobbing with Conservatives complaining about how few Conservative Movies there are coming from the Evil Liberals in Hollywood.
