Last week, Petaluma High School senior Steven Kiernan completed the Crucible at Camp Pendleton, the 54-hour ultimate physical test that shapes Marine recruits.
That was that last main hurdle for the 17-year-old who accelerated his high school education and attended boot camp to fulfill his dream of graduating with his high school class dressed in his Marine dress uniform.
But if Kiernan wants to walk and receive his diploma at the June 11 commencement, he'll have to wear a cap and gown, just like everyone else, Principal Mike Simpson said Friday.
"It's unfortunate this wasn't addressed before Steven left for boot camp," said Simpson, who notified the family earlier in the week.

Sad isn't it, there was a time when a high school would
have been proud to have a graduate in uniform.
Can't he wear it under his gown? A friend could sit on front row and hand him his cover (I think that is the correct name for the hat). He can rip off the gown, snap a salute and bring down the house! He will get a standing ovation!
Another, more enlightened high school said military uniform could be worn instead of a cap and gown. Such crap from Petaluma.

This rule is not a Commandment; this young Marine, not just like everyone else. Make an exception.
It's sad to see a eunuch promoted to the principal's office.
Why don't all the non-communist, non-anti-American, non-neocommunist parents invite one of the other Marine graduates to the ceremony. They can all wear their blues and, by their good behavior, make the losers look like, well, losers!
Sadly, it's not suprising this would happen in Sonoma County.

Ya know, I am not sure if he CAN wear it under his gown. The uniform has standards of dress and this could be against uniform 'protocol'. I don't know, but when my hubby and I got married he wore his Navy dress blues and told me he couldn't wear a flower on it. That was ok with me cause he looked JUST FINE the way he was!!

Curious how did he complete his 11 weeks of bootcamp and attend high school at the same time??
After the ceremony he can take the gown off. He can have his uniform on under the gown.

Listen up! The specified dress for the high school graduation is "Cap and Gown." A Marine follows orders and regulations as to be a part, NOT APART from his fellow Marines or in this particular case, his fellow high school graduates. Would he show up in a uniform other than the SPECIFIED UNIFORM for a military event or parade? Answer: NO! If he is a well-trained and disciplined Marine, he'll do exactly what he is supposed to do for his high school graduation: show up in Cap and Gown. I don't believe there would be a restriction to wearing his Dress Blues or Modified Blues under the Cap and Gown. Therefore, three seconds after the benediction he can toss the Cap and Gown! Mom or Dad are at the ready with his Dress Cover and Gloves ... he's got the best of both worlds!
