Claim that the Holy book was defiled by US guards at Guantanamo Bay has incensed Muslims

AT LEAST nine people were killed yesterday as a wave of anti-American demonstrations swept the Islamic world from the Gaza Strip to the Java Sea, sparked by a single paragraph in a magazine alleging that US military interrogators had desecrated the Koran.
The writers were Michael Isikoff and John Barry. I've been surfing all evening trying to find the original article.. seems Newsweek has it handily tucked away, and if you'll notice, all the articles online about it leave out the authors names (those dudes really stick together, don't ya think?)

The paragraph reads as follows:
"May 9 issue - Investigators probing interrogation abuses at the U.S. detention center at Guantanamo Bay have confirmed some infractions alleged in internal FBI e-mails that surfaced late last year. Among the previously unreported cases, sources tell NEWSWEEK: interrogators, in an attempt to rattle suspects, flushed a Qur'an down a toilet and led a detainee around with a collar and dog leash. An Army spokesman confirms that 10 Gitmo interrogators have already been disciplined for mistreating prisoners, including one woman who took off her top, rubbed her finger through a detainee's hair and sat on the detainee's lap. (New details of sexual abuse—including an instance in which a female interrogator allegedly wiped her red-stained hand on a detainee's face, telling him it was her menstrual blood—are also in a new book to be published this week by a former Gitmo translator.)"
You think all this is just a leadup to some flunky's "NEW BOOK"? This is where they got their 'facts' from???

Maybe you've got something there. We all make general statements about the MSM and the damage they do, but this is much more specifically damaging than usual. Perhaps we Conservatives can "hang onto" this one.

Except that it is extremely sloppy. The United States will not TOLERATE disrespect for the Koran? Quite the ridiculous overstatement.

Mr. Chairman, before I begin my actual testimony, I want to speak directly to Muslims in America and throughout the world. Disrespect for the Holy Koran is not now, nor has it ever been, nor will it ever be, tolerated by the United States. We honor the sacred books of all the world's great religions. Disrespect for the Holy Koran is abhorrent to us all.
There have been recent allegations about disrespect for the Holy Koran by interrogators at Guantanamo Bay and that has deeply offended many people. Our military authorities are investigating these allegations fully. If they are proven true, we will take appropriate action. Respect for the religious freedom of all individuals is one of the founding principles of the United States. The protection of a person's right to worship freely and without harassment is a principle that the government and the people of the United States take very seriously. Guaranteeing religious rights is of great personal importance to the President and to me.
During the past few days, we have heard from our Muslim friends around the world about their concerns on this matter. We understand and we share their concerns. Sadly, some people have lost their lives in violent demonstrations. I am asking that all our friends around the world reject incitement to violence by those who would mischaracterize our intentions.
Thank you very much, Mr. Chairman, and members of the committee.

I'm not going to argue, she did what any good government official should do. She has Muslim allies that she is working with.
Sloppy, sweeping overstatements hardly serve any good purpose, especially when they are meant to boost our credibility in the eyes of an already skeptical Muslim world.
Her response is exaggerated and unhelpful.
Think of it this way:
By printing the flimsiest and most spurious of untenable rumors, Newsweek has caused whackjob junior jihadis to go on (yet another) mini-autogenocide within their own ranks. Good.
In fact, I propose that Newsweek run weekly bogus accounts of alleged insults toward Might Mo, in the hope that more and more jihadis will jump off tall buildings and stone themselves silly.
Newsweek has unintentionally done the civilized world a great public service.
Not much of a resume builder if the advertisers are notified they have one month to pull all ads from the magazine or face boycott, imo.

She forgets that _none_ of the old standards apply post-911. We used to take some silly thing called habeas corpus seriously too. But anyone who would let some antiquated Magna Carta get in our way of indefinately detaining someone is giving aid and comfort to terrorists! ;>)
