Global Warming Tax

Duke Energy, a leading U.S. electricity and gas utility, announced this week its support for a global warming tax (search) — essentially a consumption tax on consumers of gasoline, oil, natural gas and coal. The tax is intended to reduce energy use and resulting emissions of greenhouse gases.

[snip]Fortunately for now, however, the politics of global warming — established by President Bush, who pulled the U.S. out of the Kyoto Protocol in 2001 — make it unlikely that we will be saddled either by an economy-hurting carbon tax or the dubious trading of hot air.

[snip]In mid-March, six energy companies — Chevron-Texaco, Anadarko, Apache, Unocal, Marathon, and Tesoro — surrendered to activist demands to “take action” on global warming, including disclosure of greenhouse gas emissioBut science is about data, not humility — and the scientific debate continues to rage over whether humans are adversely affecting global climate. Just a few weeks ago, for example, the Wall Street Journal reported that a key computer model relied on by global warming believers, is seriously flawed, predicting global warming no matter what data are entered into it.

[snip]Through our public political process, we’ve already rejected the economic disaster known as the Kyoto Protocol, a treaty whose provisions would impose $100 trillion in societal costs for a hypothetical reduction in average global temperature of 1 degree Centigrade.

There is no earthly authority equal to, greater than, or in any way above the U.S. Constitution.

Globalism must be brought to a grinding halt.

Global tax? NO.

Our "friends" abroad and the rest of the crummy third world types have been trying for years to try to figure out a way to dip into our economic wealth, and guzzle freely out of our money trough. Global taxes and their ilk will always be written in a very one-sided way; to get money out of the US and into the coffers of socialist states and tin-pot dictators.

As if what we voluntarily give them, or what they can get out of our own fuzzy-headed judges, isn't enough.

No taxation without representation

The peasants may have to break out the pitchforks and put Duke out of business.

Duke just wants to corner more of the utility business. Its position on "global warming" means higher entry barriers for smaller power producers. Its has nothing to do with the environment.

I agree with that, for dead certain.

Yet, at the Global level, even even if the US eventually had a "seat" or vague "representation" at a world governing body, I reject "representation" in that context, even in a "global" framework. All binding forms of international and world government should be rejected by the US and fought tooth and nail.

The Second and Third worlds covet what we have and seek to steal what they want through world socialism. Additionally, they give us the old kick in the pants at every turn to show their respect. The US is basically pitted against the rest of the world, yet has no clear means of realizing this yet.

Internationalist types at home actively aid and abet these world/global "causes." The US would be much, much tougher and stronger if we did not have ANY globalist political and international relations types "representing" us.

I think the world is privately afraid that if America wakes up to all this BS, that we will kick their collective tails. I would be surprised if the US finally reasserted its right to be Sovereign and Independent and repudiated all international schemes.

Our political leaders will not take a stand for our National Sovereignty, generally, and regretfully.

Hence, the US has spent the Twentieth Century helping build items like the League of Nations, the U.N, the EBRD/EEC > EU and the entire entangling framework that is designed to hedge us in.

They want to tax US and bring us down. With world socialism/tax regime, the US loses. I'm not voting for that. NO Global Tax of any kind. No thanks!

Of course a 'business' is in favor of a tax. Only individuals can pay a tax since businesses just pass 'em on...

Almost. There's a "fee" associated with the tax-collection service they're providing.

Look at what Europeans accomplished.
For the environmental good they justified slapping taxes on energy.
Sky high electricity and especially motor fuel taxes went into effect, resulting in a general cost increase in goods and services.
Unemployment rates of 10%, still not abating, and lowered factory utilization did result.
Italy in the first quarter slipped back into recession.
It does not take a scientist to conclude that these tax increases accomplished the intended effect:
A cleaner environment with lowered employment.
Do we really want to go down this road?

Can we demand a "liberal moron" tax too???

I was thinking of promoting a "windbag" tax (for liberal morons with TV time)....but your idea may be a bigger cash cow.

The UN, of course, is the obvious choice to collect this. +Let's see, UN tax on every single human being on the planet, and now a global warming tax...the possibilities are endless! Koffi will be able to afford that little Swiss chalet for the grandkids in no time.

Companies do not care whether this "tax" comes about or not. They'll just charge YOU for it.
