Microsoft Readies Its Antivirus App

Microsoft is readying a new consumer security product that offers virus and spyware protection, a new firewall and several tune-up tools for Windows PCs, a move that pits the software giant squarely against traditional security software vendors.

The product, dubbed Windows OneCare, will be tested internally at Microsoft starting this week. A public test, or beta, version is scheduled to be available by year's end, Microsoft said in a statement this week. The final product will be offered as a subscription service, the Redmond, Washington, software maker says.

OneCare marks Microsoft's long-anticipated entry into the antivirus space, until now the domain of specialized vendors such as Symantec, McAfee, and Trend Micro. Microsoft announced its intent to offer antivirus products two years ago when it bought Romanian antivirus software developer GeCAD Software SRL.

But OneCare will do more than guard against viruses and worms. The product also will include spyware protection and a new firewall that scans incoming and outgoing traffic. The firewall already included in Windows scans only incoming traffic.

Maybe the new product will squash virii, worms, etc. with the blue - or is it now red? - screen of death.

Maybe OneCare will itself be another launchpad for attacks.

Or full of bugs and vulnerabilities.

Or both.

Hope the program will be so riddled with security loopholes it becomes a flop.

Yeah, but will future versions of windows (and updated ones) still "support" the use of Norton & Co?? Somehow, I doubt it.

Same concern. Microsoft is trying to get into every household. That's really scary.

I'm happy with Trend's PC-Cillan, but I bet this will also be a good product.

I've never had a spyware problem, I've been running the Beta of the MS AntiSpyware tool, and it seems to run nicely and without hassle.

Every business would like to sell to every household. That's success.

Microsoft is in an arms race with Apple which can tout a secure computer for even the dumbest. I only use wintel machines but Apple has a good reputation for being bulletproof and hijack proof. People want to be assured of secure financial transaction on line

Yeah. Sigh. I've switched to non-Microsoft software alternatives as much as possible (ok, I admit, I feel their keyboards are better than those of Logitech nowadays so I use one). Once I manage to learn Linux I'd rather leave the Windows XP I bought for 200USD in the dust.

That's in theory. But in practice, I don't wish it to happen. Why grant a company enough economic clout to operate a monopoly? Keep the companies on their toes.

one of the many reasons that apple is bulletproof/hijack proof is that not as many people are looking to exploit Apple's systems. Microsoft is the biggest target, and they're doing their best to bring them down. If Apple's computer user base grew any significant amount, rest assured that people hacking their systems would also grow. The exploits are there, there's just no fame in it.

By now, it ought to be obvious a different paradigm is needed - My solution is Linux, and I'm now running Fedora Core 3 with no problems (easy setup) and only a simple hardware firewall and using Mozilla. Haven't seen any spyware or virus problems at all during six months as of now. Myriad problems with Win XP using similar setup... but now I have forbidden XP to talk to the internet.

I believe the $50,000 "prize" Apple offered a year or so ago to anyone hacking into one of their servers went unpaid.

Also, though it is certainly not completely foolproof, I've not seen any serious writers claiming Linux (any distribution) is not inherently more secure than Windows. Sys admins responsible for both types have written that they have NO Linux problems vs. at least half hour every day being sure their MS systems remain usable. (Mac OS X is Linux based)

You're simply trying to save yourself a minor bit of learning new things by trying to avoid Linux. Your time would be better spent learning Linux than maintaining Windows.
