I see that NAS Brunswick is staying alive but losing 2700+ military. Anyone know what the deal is there? P-3 squadrons getting shut down but not the whole base?

Thanks, Howlin. The report that was posted last night had Miramar closing, this list doesn't. Whew!

i fear that i agree with you. newport news has had much better local support from their state than eb has had from us.

the ripple effect will be horrendous.

Well, actually I am trying to look at it as a possibility of the dems "cutting their noses of in spite of their face".

I don't think it's a good idea at all, but I am not in the military so am not sure as to why they are doing this. I was in Alameda in 90 when bases started closing in some areas, and it didn't seem to help much.

A few years ago Wichita lost all of their B1's to South Dakota, it really sucked. McConnell Air Force base is on the edge of town and being steadily enveloped. They used to do "afterburner nights", folks could come set near the runway and watch them take off after dark, get up close and personal. No body complained, this town loves airplanes. I feel for South Dakota but I'd sure love to hear the crackle of those B1's again.

CRAP...Brooks City Base is on the list, there goes my 19 year career. I guess I should have expected as much, since we survived by the skin of our teeth previously. It is still going to be a tough pill to swallow.

Some bases got to stay for so long because of politics. Not sure about the ones on the list but it's possible politics kept them alive for so long and without the right backers there was little incentive to keep them around.

If Daschle was still there and it was closed, we'd be saying that it was because the voters didn't kick the SOB out. No, there seems to be equal pain among the red and blue states. Having said that, impacts in states with a relatively small economy (like SD and NM) are much greater.

Groton is famous for the Electric Boat Company (I think that's the name), submarines manufactured there (at one
point, maybe now, too). I visited the Nautilus there.
Heck even the local AM radio station has the call letters
WSUB.

Overall Virginia faired well. Though I really don't know how they are going to everyone out of leased space in Northern Virginia. That's a whole lotta people to find a home for.
