Kirtland gains 206 -- hardly a good trade-off, not even 10%.

EB's gonna have to close for sure now. With the Subbase outta there and NUWC up in Newport, RI they have no real reason to stay open.

seems to me that in your zeal to punish democrats, you are punishing a lot of people who tend to be republicans - unless you think that those who loathe the military are the ones working for it?

if this is political, then they're punishing their only allies in hostile territory. don't make sense.

A One World Order does not require any nation to maintain numerous large military bases.

the prob with your strategy is that now that the base is on the list, it will be easier to include in the next round.

i said that last time, and i'm saying it again - once on eth list, it's only a matter of time - even IF simmons does manage to save it ( And I pray that he does)

I just read the stories on superiors demanding a DECREASE in arrests of illegals coming across in AZ and another on the corruption of the border patrol agents.

Let's ask our senators to prove they are series about protecting our security before they cut off peoples economies at these bases! Give me a break.

Groton - New London? Are they the same base? The bases close,& the jobs leave. I believe most jobs get re assigned to other bases. The maintenance crews remain to take care of the post. I remember Ft Ord being closed and yet there was a military and civilian presence to take care of it. Ft Dix was closed but its still has life in it. I would classify the closings as consolidation of bases more than anything else. I've been to Otis and Hascom Field, Otis is a bear to maintain compared to Hascom. Most of the AFB's were either SAC or Air Defense bases during the cold war. Now that the threat from bombers is minimal I can see why they are being closed down. (Closed but not sold or plowed still keeps it available for possible use.) (However I can see Ft Hamilton being sold to make way for a new home for the "Brooklyn" Dodgers) Some of the closings are at bases where its is mostly office buildings. These small bases can close and move the units to other bases. (i.e. like many of the Ft Monmouth units were sent to Ft Gordon.) And yes they do have impacts on the rural communities like the closing of Plattsburg AFB had in the Northern NY region. Looking at the list it appears that most of the smaller bases could well be consolidated into the larger ones. There is still room in the regions, where other bases could take them in. Ft Drum is one base that has more lives than a cat.(It would appear that Hillary and Chuck won't let that one go while they are in office.) If it appears on the list I would be very surprised.

I have no zeal to punish anyone. I am not in favor of base closures at all. Sorry to disappoint you.

But the fact is some bases are closing, and it may backfire on the dem politicians.

I am looking for a silver lining, Mr. Doom and Gloom.

Yep.......nearly 4000 military and civilian jobs. A really big hit to South Dakota.

Considering what the voters of SD did in the last general election, this base closing will serve as a warning to all voters everywhere who have thoughts about replacing powerful, senior Senators with freshmen. This closing will increase incumbent Senators' vote totals for many elections to come.

I'm not saying it should, just that it will.
