Chaplain Wants Christ Out of Air Force Academy
NewsMax ^ | 5/12/05 | Carl Limbacher

Posted on 05/12/2005 12:41:32 PM PDT by wagglebee

Here’s a story that will throw you for a loop: a "chaplain” at the U.S. Air Force Academy is complaining that the school’s administration has a "systemic and pervasive” problem of promoting religious religious values with a Christian bent.

The chaplain, Capt. Melinda Morton, a "Lutheran minister” spoke out publicly on Tuesday as an Air Force task force arrived at the academy to investigate charges that officers and staff members pushed their religious beliefs on cadets.

And she claimed that a tolerance program developed at the academy, called Respecting the Spiritual Values of all People (R.S.V.P.), was watered down after it was shown to officers.

Maj. Gen. Charles C. Baldwin, chief of chaplains for the Air Force, screened the 90-minute R.S.V.P. film in October, according to Capt. Morton, and asked her: "Why is it that the Christians never win?” in reaction to some of the program’s depictions of cadet interactions.

"Chaplain” Morton’s complaints about too much religion at the military academy is creating waves, and earned her hero status in a report in the New York Times Thursday.

Gen. Baldwin acknowledged in an interview that he felt too many scenes in the film portrayed Christians at fault for excessive evangelical proselytizing.

He also said he asked that the Air Force cut segments on non-Christian religions such as Buddhism, Judaism and Native American spirituality.

The problem in dealing with proselytizing and church-state issues at the academy, he explained, "always is, when is a person crossing the line, or when are they being a positive person of faith, like our president.”

Last year, the Colorado Springs academy invited Yale Divinity School professor Kristen Leslie and six Yale graduate students to visit the school and observe how the chaplains minister to the cadets.

A memo from the Yale team cited the "stridently evangelical themes” at a worship service attended by 600 new cadets.

Leslie said a chaplain urged cadets to pray for those who didn’t attend and "remind them of the consequences ... those not ‘born again will burn in the fires of hell.’”

But academy spokesman Johnny Whitaker disputed that account, saying several other chaplains told him that no one mentioned burning "in the fires of hell.”

Morton, a 48-year-old "Lutheran minister," said she was removed from her post as executive officer to the chief chaplain, Col. Michael Whittington, last week. She claimed the dismissal came after he pressured her to deny details of what happened at the religious service.

But Whitaker said Whittington sent Morton an e-mail on May 4 saying he was removing her "to ensure a smooth and complete transition” for new leaders.

Morgan said she had stepped forward because "it’s the Constitution, not just a nice rule we can follow or not follow. That includes not using your power to advance your religious agenda.”

She acknowledged that after speaking out, "I don’t think I have much future in the Air Force.”

Who are these "American Baptists"? I'm guessing that isn't the Southern Baptist Convention.

Definitely NOT Southern Baptists, probably a bunch on Yankees.

I'm guessing that this lady was raised in a really tight Missouri Synod congregation, but to become a "Lutheran Minister" (is there such a thing as a "female priest"?) had to join some other group.

This needs to be straightened out since her strident attitude toward what laymen might be saying of a religious nature in a worship service suggests that she's not playing on the same team and is probably religiously confused.

There was a part of Russia where every rabbi selected was cut down by the boyer class. Eventually the Jews learned to select women as rabbis. The boyers did not kill them.

My sister in law's husband belongs to such a tradition.

Women rabbis are not a new invention but are a logical response to intensely anti-semitic oppression and murder.

You can leave now. We already know your opinion you godless, soulless, demon out of the depths of hell, right?!

Or, do you have something new to say?

I'm not holding my breath.

So why did she bother becoming a chaplain anyway? This just doesn't add up.

Good question. Several years ago I worked for a nun who was the head of Mission Effectiveness (basically the ethics department) for a major catholic hospital chain. She absolutely told me that she DID NOT BELIEVE IN THE POWER OF PRAYER. I swear those were her exact words. To this day I don't understand why she wanted to become a nun or how or why she ever was placed in charge of ethics for the entire hospital chain. She was a bitter, unhappy old lady who was the meannest employer I ever had.

Mary Magdaline ~ clearly an Apostle. Even accompanied Mary (Jesus' mother) to found a church at Ephesus.

You just stated my point. If Christ had wanted females as Apostles (preachers) he would have had one .

Remember -"many shall come in my name"---guess that goes for those who attempt to call themselves 'pastors/clergy---minions of Satan to harass and confuse those who have 'little faith'---another sign of the 'last days' that are soon upon us if not here already-

Did Christ teach that only his Apostles should spread the good news?

That's alright. It was pretty funny. And yes, there are groups in universities specifically for injecting more feminism/humanism into churches and synagogues. It's been going on for a long time.

I've been studying the early history of Christianity for some time, which led me to begin a study of the Torah in Hebrew (and the rest of the Tanakh soon--long story). But here's some information that I had archived and that might be of interest.

"Sodomite" is a word that I haven't found in the NIV (New International Version), although it is in other, older versions.

A feminist lesbian named Virginia Mollenkott helped to write the NIV. Here's some info on Mollenkott.

The New International Version - 1978
http://www.revelationwebsite.co.uk/index1/kjv/mouth4.htm#niv

Let's read something else Ms. Mollenkott had to say.

{2}Virginia Mollenkott wrote, in a letter to Christian Century (March 7, 1984, p. 252), "I am beginning to wonder whether indeed Christianity is patriarchal to its very core. If so, count me out. Some of us may be forced to leave Christianity in order to participate in Jesus' discipleship of equals."

I saw that on the following book page.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ http://www.leaderu.com/orgs/cbmw/rbmw/chapter26.html
"Charity, Clarity, and Hope: The Controversy and the Cause of Christ," John Piper and Wayne Grudem
"Two New Organizations: Council on Biblical Manhood and Womanhood Christians for Biblical Equality"
(Recovering Biblical Manhood and Womanhood A Response to Evangelical Feminism Wayne Grudem and John Piper)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

And that's the older NIV, by the way--not the new "gender inclusive" version.

Of Barker's statement (Wayne Jackson, _From Their Own Mouths - Bible Modifiers_):

"This is a very cleverly worded statement and one which we can allow Virginia Mollenkott to answer herself. In a letter to me [Michael J. Penfold] dated Dec. 18th 1996, in reply to my investigation into her true role on the NIV, Mollenkott wrote the following revealing letter:

[Virginia Mollenkott writes] "I worked on the NIV during the entire time it was being translated and reviewed, although I was never free to attend the summer sessions even when I was invited to do so. Elisabeth Elliot and I were the Stylistic Consultants: our job was simply to make sure the translation would communicate clearly to modern American readers, and that the style was as smooth and understandable as possible. I was never removed, sacked, or made redundant from my work on the NIV; if I were, my name would not have appeared on the list sent out by the IBS. It was Dr. Edwin Palmer, who lived near my college, who invited me to work on the NIV. He had heard me speak and respected my integrity and my knowledge. So far as I know, nobody including Dr. Palmer suspected that I was lesbian while I was working on the NIV; it was information I kept private at that time. Dr. Palmer always sent me the batches of translating to review, and I always returned them (with my comments) to him. I have not kept track of which of my suggestions made it into the final version; I am a busy person, and it was a labour love in the scriptures. I do not think anything concerning homosexuality was in any of the batches I reviewed. I do not consider the NIV more gay-friendly than most modern translations, so I do not understand why anybody would want to bash the NIV because a closeted lesbian worked on it. I was not a translator; if I were I would have argued that the word/concept "homosexual" is too anachronistic to be utilised in translating an ancient text. But I was a stylist and nobody asked me. I no longer have any contact with the NIV-CBT, but I am often amused to remember that I frequently refused my $5 an hour stipend because I heard the project was running out of money. At the time I was naive about how many millions of dollars are made by a successful Bible translation! Please tell Kenneth Barker for me that although there is much controversy about homosexuality among Biblical scholars, to my knowledge nobody denies that the Bible condemns lying about other people. He should be ashamed of his attempt to rewrite history."

"Somewhere in my files is the letter I got thanking me for my work on the NIV when the project was completed. I also have the slipcase version sent out to the whole NIV team in 1978 by Zondervan; and I have the tenth-anniversary edition sent out to the whole team in 1988 by the International Bible Society. Various other editions were also sent out gratis to the translation committee and stylists, but I have received nothing since 1988 that I can remember. Because I am idealistic and sincere, it never occurred to me that anyone would lie about my contributions, so I was not meticulous about keeping records. Thank you for anything you can do to set the record straight. You may utilise this letter to do so, and I'd appreciate you sending me a copy of anything you generate. Sincerely, Virginia Ramey Mollenkott."

...thus, one of many rebuttals to Barker. And there were the opinions of the homosexual NIV translator Chairman on homosexuality, Dr. Marten H. Woudstra (Michael Penfold's research, Woudstra's report for the Christian Reformed Church, 1973, Blair, Boomsma, his other colleagues).

Woudstra told the Christian Reformed Church, "There is nothing in the Old Testament that corresponds to homosexuality as we understand it today."

Northern Baptists say "there ain't no hell" and the Southern Baptists say "the hell there ain't"

What difference does it make. Christians shouldn't have a worry about hell. If it does bother a Christian, that Christian might have misheard the word crustacean.

Christ did say at the Last Supper that His disciples should go and turn Wine and Bread into his Body and Blood. There werent any women there. He also said who's sins you shall forgive, they are forgiven, He didnt say that to any women.
