"Why don't you start by taking in about 10 illegals rather than demanding the rest of us pay for this nonsense."

You are encouraging me to break the law?

Is it a matter of following the law? What about the legality of "don't ask don't tell"? Was that Divinely inspired? Or is that a man-made effort dooming to destruction our need for good order and conduct in the Armed Forces?

Tell me, what sort of attorney are you and what practice are you running in New York? I've made no demands by stating that I've halted my own judgment of others' hardships and desire to escape to America. How can you be threatened by what I've stated from my own heart? Is there something in you that festers against charity?

"Another thing - turning the other cheek to often will result in your head being lopped off."

Chris, I'm turning my cheek for you to hit the other side. You can stop attacking me any time you like.

If we want to halt all immigration, that would be fine with me...as long as we stop abortion and contraception completely. The numbers game of financing Social Security isn't going to work without allowing foreign guest workers.

Overzealous patriotism, as I've seen some anti-immigration attacks, are suspiciously anti-Catholic. My dark theory is that it prevents Catholic exorcists from removing demons from possessing and oppressing souls here in America. I think a Senator of your state could use an exorcism. I think that overzealous anti-immigration keeps us bound to spiritual enslavement by restricting charity.

Chris, I'm wondering how much native blood courses your veins to hold such a xenophobic patriotism? Maybe mere Americans aren't good enough? Maybe we have to have more than a fraction of "Native" American blood.

Maybe a spirit is oppressing your charity.

"I don't play the race card..."

Never said you did, although I haven't checked your posts. However, we both know, don't we, that certain of your fellow travelers do so?

"...you obviously do, though."

A not-so-subtle race card play. So much for the denial. I do appreciate the laugh, though.

The USCCB has not canonical authority it itself. None. Individual Bihops,a dnthe Pope of course, have canonical authority, but only when they are teaching on the subject of faith and morals.

If you want a good summary of the faith and morals, you might want to start any discussion by searching the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

2241 The more prosperous nations are obliged, to the extent they are able, to welcome the foreigner in search of the security and the means of livelihood which he cannot find in his country of origin. Public authorities should see to it that the natural right is respected that places a guest under the protection of those who receive him.

Political authorities, for the sake of the common good for which they are responsible, may make the exercise of the right to immigrate subject to various juridical conditions, especially with regard to the immigrants' duties toward their country of adoption.

Immigrants are obliged to respect with gratitude the material and spiritual heritage of the country that receives them, to obey its laws and to assist in carrying civic burdens. Note that part about OBEY ITS LAWS.

I want a halt to illegal immigration. I love immigrants who come here with two sponsors, have a job lined up, speak English, and not come here to make demands on the U.S. Taxpayer.

Your sense of "charity" is leading us to fiscal bankruptcy. Bankrupt yourself, but not me.

By the way, I do collection work for small businesses who can't get paid from deadbeats.

"Why doesn't the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops call for economic reform in Mexico?"

Because Mexicans are in Mexico. No Bishop can tell another Bishop what to do (very outside jurisdiction to admonish foreign states, Mexico has it's own Bishops). This a profound respect that shepherds' have for each others flock. Clergy admonishing clergy is a very serious matter and far above our blogger level.

Agency Law in the US basically says that a stand by officers in a corporation are the same as a stand by the corporation.

That may not be the ecumenical fact but if this stance were to result in legal action it would roll all the way to the top.

Agree with you on those points, although, unless they are well educated or from India, few immigrants come here speaking English. My great-grandmother never ventured outside of her Polish enclave in Newark and never had to learn the language.

>> netmilsmom: What was that we were saying of cyber exorcisms<<

When you state that you might be at the Vatican one day, are you studying to be a priest?

I've already taken the role of Anti-Catholic Troll hunter. Perhaps you could be our cyber-exorcist?
Know any prayers to St. Benedict?

Pray for my girls, Tony.
It's a big, bad world out there and they need all the prayers they can get!

Fellow travelers?! Again, that seems to be the tactic of you and yours, TJ.

I'm sorry, I put the italics in incorrectly, thus messing up the quote from the Catechism. It goes as follows:

Political authorities, for the sake of the common good for which they are responsible, may make the exercise of the right to immigrate subject to various juridical conditions, especially with regard to the immigrants' duties toward their country of adoption.

Immigrants are obliged to respect with gratitude the material and spiritual heritage of the country that receives them, to obey its laws and to assist in carrying civic burdens.

Note that part about OBEY ITS LAWS. Now that's the Catholic Catechism. And I think it would be reliably authoritative and official under the the category of moral obligations.

With your tagname I always assumed you were a goombah like me. My grandparents came here and learned English within 6 months and had almost no accent by the time they passed on. Additionally, despite the fact that millions and millions of Italians came here, they never demanded that the language and culture be changed to suit them. They assimiliated.

I am so sick of the current welfare entitlement mentality that says taxpayers have to pay for insanity. 1/3 of the Federal prison population are illegals!!!!

Get them out of here.

Thank you for clarification. We do have to make our temporal system of government work. That's a duty and responsibility.

BTW, it was not I who lowered the standards on immigrants. I certainly wouldn't do it if I hired foreigners. I don't allow low standards from those non-Americans who do work with me.

Furthermore, we get strong allies from law abiding legal aliens and naturalized citizens who see illegals literally getting away with murder. Reward requires work and following ethical rules.

That being said, I generally encounter better workers who are foreign born then American born. But not to generalize too much, it ultimately depends on the individual.

God isn't an "American". I follow Jesus before I follow man. If that gets my "head lopped off", then wouldn't it be better to be a martyr than lose my soul over human respect.

Good luck tracking down debts.

I do Commercial Collections mostly. Believe it or not, I do not have the heart to go after people who owe medical bills or similar debt.

Immigrants who come here legally are usually the best among us. Those that come here illegally are usually the worst.

Think about it, it is like the gun control debate and background checks. Whould someone who undergoes background checks, FBI check, fingerprinting, etc etc, then go knock off a bank? Of course not!

However, some criminal who buys a gun on the black market without doing what the law abiding citizen went through is a far greater threat and far more likely to commit crime.

Does that make sense????

"Actually you did,..."

Wishing won't make it so. Shall we just put this down to the basic reading and comprehension problems shared among your group?

"Who needs facts, huh?"

What would you know about facts?

"Fellow travelers?! Again, that seems to be the tactic of you and yours, TJ."

"TJ"-- have you now adopted TiaJuana as your new signoff? How appropriate...

I've asked for certain things from God and even though I'm quickly approaching middle age, I still don't know what I'm going to be when I grow up. I like where I am (and hope that my life doesn't need to be "shaken up").

Personally, I wouldn't mind finding a wife and making about 1,000 babies (naturally if possible and by adoption for what we don't achieve by nature). I figure if I had the means, I'd open a Benedictine monastery on the ocean itself (two if possible--1 for the Atlantic and 1 for the Pacific). They could be fisheries and universities...and even a retreat for honeymooners (to make more Catholics :-) so romantic, sigh). St Peter was a fisher and I think that we can learn a lot from his profession. It's also very aggressive in moving the Kingdom of Heaven over the "abyss" and nothing short of invading the Evil One's lair (other than outer space). But that's all cosmic hoo-haw above my understanding (ancient Jewish imagery is very cool stuff).

Here are some prayers to St. Benedict:

http://www.catholic-forum.com/saints/saintb02.htm

Prayer 1:

Admirable Saint and Doctor of Humility, you practiced what you taught, assiduously praying for God's glory and lovingly fulfilling all work for God and the benefit of all human beings. You know the many physical dangers that surround us today, often caused or occasioned by human inventions. Guard us against poisoning of the body as well as of mind and soul, and thus be truly a "Blessed" one for us. Amen.

Prayer 2:

Glorious Saint Benedict, sublime model of virtue, pure vessel of God's grace! Behold me humbly kneeling at your feet. I implore you in your loving kindness to pray for me before the throne of God. To you I have recourse in the dangers that daily surround me. Shield me against my selfishness and my indifference to God and to my neighbor. Inspire me to imitate you in all things. May your blessing be with me always, so that I may see and serve Christ in others and work for His kingdom.

Graciously obtain for me from God those favors and graces which I need so much in the trials, miseries and afflictions of life. Your heart was always full of love, compassion and mercy toward those who were afflicted or troubled in any way. You never dismissed without consolation and assistance anyone who had recourse to you. I therefore invoke your powerful intercession, confident in the hope that you will hear my prayers and obtain for me the special grace and favor I earnestly implore. {mention your petition}

Help me, great Saint Benedict, to live and die as a faithful child of God, to run in the sweetness of His loving will, and to attain the eternal happiness of heaven. Amen.

Prayer 3:

Father, in your goodness grant me the intellect to comprehend you, the perception to discern you, and the reason to appreciate you. In your kindness endow me with the diligence to look for you, the wisdom to discover you, and the spirit to apprehend you. In your graciousness bestow on me a heart to contemplate you, ears to hear you, eyes to see you, and a tongue to speak of you. In your mercy confer on me a conversation pleasing to you, the patience to wait for you, and the perseverance to long for you. Grant me a perfect end - your holy presence. Amen.

It took three generations for Italians to fully assimilate in this country. For me assimilation means NOT living in an ethnic community, intermarrying with the larger population, and not retaining any of you ancestral mother tongue.

Mother's side of the family was Italian. First generation conversed largely in Italian, although they did eventually learn HEAVILY ACCENTED English after living here for a few years. Second generation conversed in Italian with their parents, but English with their siblings and friends, with a few Italian phrases thrown in here and there (this is, btw, the way it was with the children of Latin immigrants who I lived among in Miami a few years back). The third generation (my mom and her siblings) left the neighborhood, intermarried and don't speak a word of Italian.

Martin Scorsese said it best: The first generation is Italian. The second generation are American-Italians. The third generation are Italian-Americans. The fourth generation (raising my hand) are simply Americans.

The idea that European immigrants from the 1880s to the 1920s came here with the desire to be Wonderbread-and-Mayo "Americans" is a myth, as they settled in ethnic GHETTOS just like the Chinese, Dominicans, Armenians and Pakistanis are doing today. As a matter of fact, many of the more successful Indian, Latin American and Eastern European immigrants are settling among the Anglos in ONE GENERATION, which is more than I could say about the Poles and Italians a century ago.

I'm with a company that removed several workers for illegal entry into the States. They were all from very anti-American nations (like those that enjoy beheading infidels and unbelievers). I do have a stake in keeping the workplace pro-American, and I do wave the flag. I don't like removing kind-hearted workers because of red tape and have alerted the authorities when there is a problem with paper work. I don't hesitate removing malicious hearted legal aliens and others (and have done so).

Thanks for being charitable to those who need it the most. I will offer prayers to you and your work.
