Time to prosecute the Free Republic vandal outright. (Vanity)
today | By Lazamataz

Posted on 05/09/2005 5:54:33 AM PDT by Lazamataz

There is an internet vandal who defaces Free Republic with very gross pictures (homosexual sex and stuff from rotton.com) as well as posting "ALL YOU F***** N*****S & JEWS SHOULD BE LYNCHED".

He pings a variety of people to his post, ensuring that the trash is still in their My Posts lists.

To me, this isn't the milder form of harassment that Eschoir engaged in so many years ago. The very worst he would do is ask if you ever committed sodomy, and he once used the screen name "Paula Jones Tw*t". This is mild.

What this sick piece of work is doing is much more egregious. I believe it crosses the line into criminal defacement and restraint of trade. Are there any Free Republic lawyers (especially prosecutors) who can address this issue, and are there any private detectives with internet savvy that will help track the identity of this person down?

I recieved a threat a few weeks ago from a poster who was promising to actively work against FreeRepublic. He said that all he was trying to do was post other view points and that I had prevented him from doing that. Apparently, I had revealed that the poster was a disruptor who posts under different screen names, but I didn't report him to the moderators. At least I don't think that I did.

FR admins will have to get involved. It starts with the IP address that the individual used, and goes from there.

It's an ugly business chasing people down, and prosecuting them for crimes on the net. Interstate warrants often have to be secured, as well as coordination between state level, and potentially federal LEOs. If the perp is out of the country, there's about a ZERO chance of ever catching him/her unless the hosting country is willing to cooperate at all levels.

From my past experience, I think we don't have much of a chance of actually making this person sorry for what they did. The LEOs just aren't going to be willing to put any effort into it. Now if the person had posted a photo of a (obviously) minor child engaged in a sex act, that "might" give them grounds. But as nasty as the photo was, and as ugly as the verbage, I just don't think we're going to be able to get LEOs to take notice.

I could be wrong though. I'm only speaking from experience, and in my experience, we went after common sickos last. First on the list were people using the net to arrange wife swappings and sex with kids. People simply doing things like this person were way down on our list of priorities.

...having said all that, I hope the person who posted that original peice of garbage gets a anti-biotic resistant fungal rash in a most unpleasant place, and for a VERY long time. :-)

>>Why is it that you appear to be returning to the scene of the crime? This thread isn't about you. But you want to make it so.<<

That treatment in that thread was formative to my opinion of Freep but I have no desire for this thread to be about me - I didnt want that one to be about me either.

I do however, have experience with trying to keep harrassers off commercial forums.

1. If the members can let the posts be quietly deleted that can work - my point was I don't believe it will work here.

2. Any form of IP banning will eventually fail because of the number of free proxy servers available on the net. You can restrict access thorugh proxies but then many people will not be able to post from work.

3. Prosecution, unless the person does something that can be labled as a threat, will be very difficult if not impossible. One case in Boston eventually resulted in an injuction at which point the perp got 10 of his friends involved.

4. The web sites I have been involved with eventually concluded they had two choices - put up with a certain amount of disruption or establish a waiting period for new posters. Both solutions are less than fully satisfactory.

5. Theo nly really satisfactory solutions hgave come in cases where the membership could act cohesively.

Laz,

I'd be wiling to bet that if someone looked hard enough on DU, they'd be able to find out who is doing this. This kind of moron won't be able to keep from bragging about it. There are enough sick "people" on DU that it is the obvious place to look for clues.

I'm not sure which freepers have stomach enough to regularly look at DU, but it might make sense to enlist their help. It is entirely possible that this is not done by a single person. The charge of "conspiracy" can be used for just about anything.

"It's the work of a sick individual.

I hope he is prosecuted."

What kind of father/mother did this pervert have. They should both be spanked. They, along with him, would be prosecuted and sent to prison. If my young son/daughter had seen that, I would come after him with my shot gun. Absolute disgrace.

Believe me, you are MUCH HAPPIER not seeing this filth.

Yes always in the morning!

Where you are, where I am yes. Not necessarily where the poster is.

Interesting. Sounds like they have a spyware or malware app running there.

Yes it does. I just checked 'History' and http://blig.ig.com/index appears there. (hadn't thought to check it before) The malware my be inherent to that site and not part of James54's hack but he brought it here so the intention is the same AFAIC.

The prefix to that URL 'cricamarvin', which is part of the URL the JPG comes from, may indicate his personal connection to that site. More internet savvy FReepers might know the significance of that.

By using the clients pop3 isp email for registration, you eliminate all these 3rd party email accounts, and it tells you who the person's isp is, and makes it much easier to track them down should the need arise.

Ahh ... I think I see what you are proposing. No "free" e-mail addy can be used to register. No hotmail, hotpop, yahoo, gmail, etc. e-mail addy's are acceptable.

Yes, that would narrow the field. Only people who have an account with an ISP could register.

Also, it stops multiple account creation.

And would stop the husband/wife tag-teams here too ;-) Just kidding.

For a reviled public forum, FR has an amazingly small number of hit and run attacks.

BTW, ironic to see freepers suddenly supportive of hate crime laws, isn't it?

it's ironic and disgusting. i hate "hate crimes" legislation. too big brother for me...right oout of George Orwell's 1984.

Many freepers would do well to read that book (and others) again, and get back to some conservative basics.

i don't believe this conservative support for "hate crimes" charges is a legit case of fighting fire with fire (i.e., a case of the greater good).

I agree, don't prosecute him with a "hate crime". Let's see what those newfangled anti-terrorism laws can do to somebody in his case.
