Two of the Seattle Area's most prominent social conservatives, Orthodox Rabbi Daniel Lapin and Antioch Church and former Dallas Cowboy great Pastor Ken Hutcherson give a joint reply here to a Reform Rabbi's attack on their opposition to same sex marriage. Its also a defense of traditional values and an impressive display of ecumenism in an era when moral relativism and secular fundamentalist intolerance run riot. Religious Jews and Christians are NOT bigots and have earned a seat at the table of democracy to advance their agenda. A fact of life for liberals to get used to.

Let's see if this old Episcopalian/Honorary Jew ( Yer Obediant Servant, Sirrah! ) can locate a couple of somewhat related links...

Same-Sex "Marriage" Is Not a Civil Right -- While I don’t go out of my way to harass homosexuals, I likewise don’t want to be harassed by homosexual activists who try to force me to accept their behavior as normal.
It’s not normal, it’s not healthy, emotionally or physiologically, and it’s not a right.

Am reminded of the verse "Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation;Every City or house divded
against itself shall not stand."Matthew 12;25;Mark 3:24;Luke
11:17) It is my experience that when something divides a house the point where the corruption is introduced collapses
first.Depending upon how strong the house is -- and how firm the foundation, the stength and duration of the dividing force seem the factors relevant as to if the house can be restored. The wheat and the tares have been
competing for the same feild for a long time. Come the
harvest one will be brought to the storehouse of the landowner- the other cast into the fire.

As a conservative I am in the minority in my belief that homosexuality is a Divine or Darwinian way of keeping faulty genetics from reproducing. This Darwinian or Divine probability of survival of the fittest is a possibility that our leaders have a duty to factor even if their faith trumps analytical thought that entertains theological paradox.

That said, I like our culture just the way it is and we shouldn't be tampering with its success.

Since there is no proof that homosexuality is genetic, perhaps your faith in Darwinian "survival of the fittest" has trumped your ability to thoughtfully and honestly analyze the evidence.

The enlarged 7th interstitial nucleus found in cadaver studies, and trumpeted as the genetic link to homosexuality, could be enlarged (hypertrophied) through use, similar to the growth of exercised muscle tissue.

You may recall that the cadaver studies were performed and published by a practicing homosexual.

Sometimes, "I don't know" is the best answer, specifically regarding the nature vs. nurture argument of homosexuality.

Faith is useful for the many "I don't know(s)" of life. I believe that homosexuality is unbridled lust, since it can be "controlled", unlike other genetic traits.

It has been said that the highest praise of God consists in the denial of Him by the atheist, who finds creation so perfect that he can dispense with a creator.

What a masterfully-crafted article... Lots of "good stuff" to ponder. One statement out of many that caught my attention was, "Additionally, we also believe, though this seems obvious, that living in a healthy and vital society with a long-term future is more valuable than living in a doomed one. ".

That is a critical point of differentiation - while many supporters of homosexual marriage might demur to the characterization, it is clear to me that a major impetus behind their efforts is their hatred for traditional American society and culture, and their resultant excitement at the prospect of damaging it, step by step, in a long march towards its destruction. (Although I should in fairness state that not all such proponents fit that broad-brush characterization - there is certainly a libertarian argument which can be made that differs from the nihilistic approach that permeates much of the discussion favoring gay marriage). Which leads me to believe that a doomed society is in fact their unstated goal. Those who believe in "living in a healthy and vital society with a long-term future" may find it hard to understand the goals of the "doomers", but they should remain vigilant against them...

he fired off three grenades at us.

The first: In regard to homosexual conduct as a sin, we demonstrate that we lack love and compassion.

Second: We sully religious faith with political exploitation.

And third: We hurl out our hate speech, while safely hiding behind our ethnic identities.

I was going to make some comments on these, BUT the writers have done such a good job of demolishing these "arguments" that I have nothing further to say.

Frankly, what baffles us both is how you, calling yourself a rabbi, can completely ignore that book which God presented to the Jews at Mount Sinai 3,317 years ago.

What's so baffling? Anyone who knows anything about the Reform movement knows very well that one of its central tenets is that the Torah and the Oral Law were created by men, not G-d. Not being Divine, they can be obeyed or ignored depending on how convenient a particular law or clause may be. As anyone reading this might surmise, this view is "just a little bit" untraditional.

My own personal view is that Reform Jews are Jews (at least those descended from demonstrably Jewish mothers, not from those who conveniently converted in order to be married), but the religion that they profess to practice isn't Judaism. It is similar, it has certain things in common, but it ain't the real article. The sooner they and everyone else realize that, the better off everyone will be.

It goes without saying that both Jews and Christians can work together without compromising their respective beliefs, standing against a common enemy. It is not so much "ecumenism," which in our morally relative environment has come to mean "tolerance" of pretty much everything, including Islam, but professionalism.

Here is an example of two hardcore professionals modeling just that, and rhetorically pounding a mutual attacker into the intellectual pavement.

Good for them!  !

I too liked that quote. The strongest arguement to a person who asks "How does homosexual marriage, or homosexual normalcy harm you?" It is clear that it may not harm specific individuals. Some of us are well past the age that homosexuals target for recruitment. But we can still see that the society that they want to emerge and florish is not a society that holds enough morality to survive. We have to be firm about this. Even to the extent that we support a constitutional ammendmant.

Yes, you are right; Conservative Judaism has likewise followed a path away from Judaism over the past 30 years. In concert with the Reform Movement, the Conservative Movement has multiplied its shame by last week coming out formally in favor of plans for a 10 days of homosexual celebration in Jerusalem.

The new divinity of Reform and Conservative Jewry is called "diversity."
