Authorities launched a manhunt Sunday after a decorated police detective was slain and another was wounded as they were working off-duty as security officers at a celebration in west Denver.
Police said they were looking for a tattooed male suspect, age 20 to 25. Police Chief Gerry Whitman said he considered the suspect dangerous.
"He ambushed this police officer without warning, shot two police officers. I think he's very dangerous," Whitman said. "For the safety of other officers and the community, we need to get this guy off the street right now."
The slain detective was identified as Donald R. Young, a married father of two and a recipient of the police Medal of Honor and other awards. He was approached from the back and shot multiple times as he worked security for an event at a hall often used for birthday parties and baptisms, Whitman said. It was not immediately clear whether Young was wearing a bulletproof vest.
Detective John H. Bishop, who was wearing a vest, also was shot.
He was treated for a minor wound on his back and released from Denver Health Medical Center.
Neither Young nor Bishop was able to return fire. Two other officers who were nearby rushed to their aid and saw a man fleeing the area armed with what appeared to be a weapon.
Both officers were in uniform but working off-duty, police said.
One witness said the officers were shot when they refused to allow a person inside.
Two people were in custody Sunday including one man who appeared to match the description who was arrested on other charges, but it was unclear whether he was involved in the slaying, Whitman said.
Crime Stoppers offered a $50,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and charges in the case.
The shooting occurred shortly before 1 a.m. while dozens of people were still inside the hall. Some witnesses said they heard five shots.
Young is survived by his wife and two young daughters.
He graduated from the police academy in December 1993 and had worked with the vice-narcotics unit and domestic violence unit. He was assigned to the fugitive-bomb squad when he died, police said.

Yeah, could be.
No kidding. What would we do without police chiefs to 'splain things for us?
There's a $50,000 reward, and no description of the shooter.
Well, I suppose that a description that fits 90% of the 20-25 year old males out there really isn't much of a description. They just should have said the shooter was a male and left it at that....
Thanks for the description, Rocky Mountain News. I wonder which of the hundred or so tattooed males 20-25 I see running around every day I should turn in for the $50,000?
If they could see tats & get an age range, surely they must have hair/skin coloration? Height/weight estimates?
I'm getting sick of this PC stuff, when people's lives have already been lost, and others may be endangered as well.
Prayers to the victims' families.
Prayers up for the Families.
and
Burn in H&!! you chicken$h!t scumbags that did the shooting...
The suspect is described as Hispanic male, extremely short hair, almost shaven, with a thin moustache, slightly heavy-set wearing white shirt with sleeves down to the elbows and either Khaki or light brown pants. He was described as approximately 5'6" - 5' 10" and possibly in his mid-20s.
If he was a white guy, they would have said so. PC will be the death of us.
Oh, sorry, I missed the tattooed male, age 20-25 description. But you're right, that's not really helpful at all.
Prayers for the family.
This sucks big time.
A lot of cops don't wear vests when working off duty but in uniform, thinking it's unlikely something will happen. Never figured that out.
Nobody knows, but it's estimated that there are 100,000 plus of them in the USA now.
And our President and AG could not care less.

Several callers to local talk radio claim to have seen this guy on Americas Most Wanted for some other killing (cop?)
As long as his buddies' farms and factories have dirt cheap slave labor.
I am waiting to see if he IS an illegal.I wonder about the callers who say this guy has been profiled on AMW before for another crime. There is speculation today that this may have been a gang initiation thing.
