LOONIES," "THE American Taliban," "Frist Jihadists," "the Ayatollah bin Dobson"-all these terms and more were thrown at evangelical Christians last week as the controversy surrounding the abuse of the filibuster by Senate Democrats grew in scope and volume.
Any regular visitor to leftist blogs such as DailyKos and Legal Fiction is accustomed to the brass-knuckled bigotry directed at Christians who also happen to be conservative. In fact, the posts at Democratic Underground are even more vituperative. Many media and political circles are showing a rise in Christian-bashing.
Some on the left might say that evangelicals deserve this abuse given their own harsh rhetoric, but careful reading of the leaders of the evangelical movement reveals nothing paralleling this level of hate and anger. It is certainly true that evangelical leaders typically oppose same-sex marriage and demand an end to filibusters of people of faith like Judge William Pryor-a devout Catholic whom Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) found unsupportable because of Mr. Pryor's "deeply held beliefs." Evangelical leaders also support care for the very young and very old, and urge robust participation in public affairs by people of faith. But they do not engage in personal attacks that equate their opponents with terrorists or jihadists.
Appearing on ABC's This Week with George Stephanopoulos on April 18, Sen. Schumer took aim at Christian political activists and asserted that "[s]omething is in the air. That something is wrong, different than the tradition of America."
If Mr. Schumer meant the hate-filled rhetoric of the hard left of the Democratic Party, he is absolutely correct, and he should direct those in his party's faithful to cease the abuse and the threats. But if he meant that it is wrong and outside the traditions of American political activity for people who take their faith seriously to have that faith guide them in their political activity, then he is wrong, and not just wrong, but ignorant of the legacies of leaders like Martin Luther King, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Woodrow Wilson, Teddy Roosevelt, Abraham Lincoln, William Lloyd Garrison, John Adams, George Washington, and John Woolman, to mention but a few of the millions for whom a faith-based politics was an undeniable reality.
The right of people of faith to participate in politics must be defended, and the new McCarthyism that seeks their expulsion from the public square wholly and emphatically rejected.
Roger that ~ Bump!
Liberal fundamentalists are the neo-Stalinists, spreading lies like CBS and spreading destruction like the hippies did during Vietnam War. Spread the term Liberals aka neo-Stalinists.
I would agree, in part. The lefts efforts in silencing Christians goes far beyond the halls of government and political and judiciary appointees.
They wish to silence our collective voice completely from the public arena. Dictatorship/communism requires all opposing views of their form of "government" be squelched. Snuffed out. Exterminated. This is strong language, but history reveals it's truth.
The motive goes beyond payback. It's roots lie in the desire to dominate and control.
Well said.
The recent articles on "Dominionism" coupled with the new Democratic rhetoric, as expressed by Schumer, provide clear evidence that there is, indeed, "something in the air".
The left is mounting a shameful attempt to demonize people of faith, striving to drive them (and their beliefs) from the public square. This is not a battle they can be allowed to win.
Thank you for the info.
They will call good evil . . .
"Sen. Schumer took aim at Christian political activists and asserted that "[s]omething is in the air. That something is wrong, different than the tradition of America."
Ahhhh...so Chuckie and the 'Rats think that christian opinions are 'wrong' for America, ay? Don't the communists and neo-fascists muslims suppress christians also? So Chuckie and the 'Rats are truly revealing their bigoted hatred for christians.....Excuse me Chuckie but the founding fathers held to very pro-christian standards in designing the constitution. This is the tradition of America Sen. Chuckie....not your revisionist, marxist re-make of this country via expunging of christian participation. The path you and your leftist cohorts would lead us down is one of utter ruin. That is what's truly wrong and christians who love this country and its liberties for all will not be reduced to second class citizens or denied our rights to participate in this government.
I would suggest that not only do they wish to expung our participation, but they wish to silence us completely. I do not believe this is an absurd accusation either. The liberals won't use such words at this time because it would be considered unacceptable language.
I once had a conversation with a Christian friend who used to be a radical liberal. During one of our discussions I stated that liberals no doubt enjoyed hearing about Christians being killed for their faith. My friend nodded in agreement. She admitted to being one of them.
Prisons and unmarked graves around the world are filled with Christians who were/are imprisoned, tortured, and ultimately killed simply for openly expressing their faith in Christ. We may not have to look overseas in the not too distant future to witness such evil.
Let us continue to fight, both publicly and on our knees in private.
These people (liberals) should be encouraged. Let them promote hatred against Christians, then let them ask for their vote ever again. Watch for there to be a huge increase in turnout in 2006 and 2008 by evangelicals just to show the Dems up.
Thanks for looking.

I'm not sophisticated enough to be a Democrat - I believe in God.

Watchwords for our time!
I would agree that civil discourse is desperately lacking.
That being said, may the fleas of a thousand camels infest the good senators jockey shorts. :^D
