• Last month, volunteers calling themselves Minutemen descended on the Arizona border to deter illegal immigrants from crossing into the United States, and a Southern California organization announced plans to do the same near San Diego this summer.
• Last week, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger praised the work of the Minutemen, saying, "They've done a terrific job."
• Earlier this week, Southern California Assemblyman Ray Haynes, R-Murrieta, submitted a proposed initiative that would establish a state police force to enforce immigration laws.
• And the U.S. Senate is poised to approve a measure that would, among other things, discourage states from issuing driver's licenses to illegal immigrants.
Gonzalez fears these elements are combustible and could spark violence.
She also knows there's no simple answer to her question.
Paul Rosenzweig is a senior legal research fellow at the Heritage Foundation. "There's a growing sense of dissatisfaction with the current (immigration) system," he said.
Though the Heritage Foundation is a conservative think tank, Rosenzweig said liberal immigration advocates agree that change is needed.
"I don't think there's any consensus on what the right answer is," he said.
It seems everyone has jumped into the immigration debate, from President Bush - who has advocated a guest worker program - to California's GOP governor.
One popular theory is that Schwarzenegger's comments were a politically motivated attempt to boost his sagging poll numbers.
But activists on all sides offer a variety of reasons for recent immigration-related debates, border patrols and proposals.

I'm reading here about people expressing their sentiments about illegal immigrants pouring in from Mexico by the millions. I'm completely baffled by your assertion that they are trashing hispanics in general, and not ILLEGAL ALIENS in particular. What should they say, these illegals are just popping up from the earth and not really streaming in from Mexico?
I think what you're really saying, (without knowing it), is that if all the illegal aliens penetrating our borders in the dark of night and evading our immigration system just happen to be Mexicans, then that speaks for itself. They are not immigrants in the same sense our parents and forefathers were, they are infiltrators.

Earth to LM: They are already there. They have been brought up with line "Republicans are Racists" their whole lives. A few yahoos won't make any difference.

therefore Republicans hate illegal aliens

What is funny is that "Mexican" (or even "Latino") is not a race. My beautifully exotic-looking Mexican wife is taken for lots of ethnicities, but almost never Mexican. If you go to Mexico City, Monterrey or Guadalajara, you would think you were in Sweden.

Oh no! That's exactly what the open border crackpots and enemies of America would like us to believe.
The majority of the American people do not want our country to turn into another Haiti, or Brazil, or Mexico or a combination thereof. They don't want the country our forefathers created to turn into a colony of the alien invaders.
Some Americans are indifferent to the most critical issue facing the country and its rapid transformation and think that an American Haiti or Mexico is not inevitable. But we can avoid such a fate if we once again take control of our government, the media and our borders NOW.
The longer we wait, the harder the battle for our survival and freedom that we -- and even more so, our children -- will face.
No nation in the history of the world has undergone such a sweeping demograhic shift in so short a period. Time to act, arrest and reverse the trends, or we can kiss America good bye.

If you are comfortable with that then you will be pleased when the first nuke goes off in one of our major cities. To think that there is no problem with illegals is to bury your head in the sand and hope for the best. We need to get our borders under control and make sure the only immigrants we have coming into this country are legal.
The days when we could have an open border are gone, terrorists ended that forever on 9/11, it is just that our politicians and liberals haven't figured it out yet, or just don't want to.
