....snip......
"Why are they so angry?" asked Teresa Gonzalez, 57, a Mexican immigrant and naturalized citizen.
"They," according to Gonzalez, include a variety of individuals and groups:
Last month, volunteers calling themselves Minutemen descended on the Arizona border to deter illegal immigrants from crossing into the United States, and a Southern California organization announced plans to do the same near San Diego this summer.
Last week, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger praised the work of the Minutemen, saying, "They've done a terrific job."
Earlier this week, Southern California Assemblyman Ray Haynes, R-Murrieta, submitted a proposed initiative that would establish a state police force to enforce immigration laws.
And the U.S. Senate is poised to approve a measure that would, among other things, discourage states from issuing driver's licenses to illegal immigrants.
Gonzalez fears these elements are combustible and could spark violence.
She also knows there's no simple answer to her question.
Paul Rosenzweig is a senior legal research fellow at the Heritage Foundation. "There's a growing sense of dissatisfaction with the current (immigration) system," he said.
Though the Heritage Foundation is a conservative think tank, Rosenzweig said liberal immigration advocates agree that change is needed.
"I don't think there's any consensus on what the right answer is," he said.
It seems everyone has jumped into the immigration debate, from President Bush - who has advocated a guest worker program - to California's GOP governor.
One popular theory is that Schwarzenegger's comments were a politically motivated attempt to boost his sagging poll numbers.
But activists on all sides offer a variety of reasons for recent immigration-related debates, border patrols and proposals.

Doesn't sound as though that "naturalization" made her much of a citizen.
Perhaps the naturalization process needs to be scaled WAY back.
The problem is not with Mexicans, it's with control of the border. The same trails that illegals use can be used by smugglers and terrorists. And neither the Mexican people nor the Mexican government care about it. Instead of Mexico putting pressure on the U.S., it should be the other way around.
What is so hard to figure out? Guard the borders so a terrorist with a nuke dosen't cross, and take out one of our cities.
As for Mexicans who want to come to this nation to work, let them. So long as they pass criminal background checks. I have no problems elimnating the minimum wage for migrant workers either. But it should be all able bodied welfare recipients that take those jobs first.
Odds are, that at age 57, she's probably an illegal who was granted one of the previous amnesties.
What a stupid statement! To dismiss the Governor's involvement in this issue as mere debate is an insight to the naive stupidity of the author. The Governor fulfilling his constitutional role for the State of California by laying the foundation in an effort to stop the invasion of his state.
Amen, and as for what we are so angry about, well for one thing, look at that woman killed in Rockland County, NY by an illegal.
We are angry about you all bringing your violent Latin American ways to our country.
NON-YANKIS GO HOME!
Why are "they" so angry?
OMG! We're the "they" --- and this from a naturalized citizen. God bless the MinuteMen, and Arnold for finally speaking up.
"Why are "they" so angry?"
A better question is "Why is she so happy?".
There won't be an America in 25 years if this keeps up.
oH yeah. Brand anyone who wants secure borders as racist, and pushing hispanics to the Rats.
Spend a little time on the southern US border and see how absolutely wrong you are.
And in a few years, she gets to go on Social Security and Medicare! All on our tax dollars!
"The consequence of all this hispanic-bashing will be to push hispanics over to the Democrat party along with Republican gays and Republican pro-choicers."
And we know how solidly hispanics vote Republican. So what youre trying to tell us is that unless we assent to illegal immigration we are racists, probable murderers, and party killers?
A lot of the problem lies right here with our greedy businessmen. Have you ever considered the fact that we can't buy a single product made in America anymore because the greedy businessmen refuse to pay AMERICAN workers a decent wage? They either ship everything overseas for manufacture or use illegals or raw immigrants here at home so they can pay them crap and give you and I crappy service at every store or business we deal with.
You are SO wrong, on so many counts.
If the measure is "some people," then you can make any point you want. "Some people" want machine guns and land mines at the border. "Some people" want an internal anti-Hispanic pogrom. Most of us, however, are reasonable individuals who do in fact distinguish between legal and illegal residents, and most certainly don't want people executed just for being or trying to get here illegally. The Minutemen did a good job of keeping the crazies out of their midst, and we can likewise make it clear that the more extreme elements on this issue aren't speaking for the majority.
Exactly. "Some" hispanics want to pull a "reconquista" on the southwest. In fact a poll said a majority of Mexicans believe they can come illegaly because the southwest really belongs to mexico.
