I am not sure Closing Argument can repeat his performance. Since the Preakness is almost a sprint race he is going to have to rely a little more on speed + indurance. I think Afleet Alex is better off at this distance at this point. Giacamo could definitely win, but he hasn't won two races in a row yet. Still cannot rule out High Fly or Bellamy Road because it looks like they will run if they are ok.

It was a splendid race. Wonder how Giacomo will do in the next two races? If he was such a long shot for the Derby, can he pull out the Triple Crown?

What about Spanish Chestnut at that distance?

I think Spanish Chestnut has more of a shot at that distance. If he runs, he has a better shot at lasting.

Just got home from the Derby! What a grand time!

My friends gave me a silver engraved mint julep cup...

Must be doing something right to have such fabulous friends in Louisville...and a good time was had by all.

It's James in Italian. It's also my father-in-law's name. (And also the reason that his daughters each won between one and five hundred bucks!)

What makes you say that. He beat all the best horses today. Who knows what he can do?

Track length, possibly. He was nowhere until the last turn. He wouldn't have won a shorter race. OTOH, Belmont is a longer race. I don't know about the Preakness.

But his odds will be down to about 12-1 for the Preakness.

And congratulations to anyone born on 10-18 who played their birthday as an exacta.

Special congratulations to anyone born October 18, 1912 and played the trifecta. (Can you buy me lunch today, I'm kinda short.)

Pretty clean. Flower Alley sawed off Noble Causeway and High Limit before the first turn.

Giacomo, son of Holy Bull and the $102.60 winner that hardly anyone picked, was named for Sting's young son by horse owner Jerry Moss, former owner of A&M ...

JOCKEY Mike Smith and trainer John Shirreffs kept saying Giacomo was a good horse. No one would listen.

Yet the colt with the musical connection was a surprising hit at the Kentucky Derby (2000m) at Churchill Downs yesterday.
Named for the nine-year-old son of singer Sting, Giacomo pulled the second-biggest upset in Derby history, winning at 50-1. He finished a half a length ahead of Closing Argument, an even longer shot at 72-1.

Welcome home! Glad to hear you had a great time. Looks like you had great weather at the Kentucky Derby also, from what I could see on television. How are those mint juleps, anyway? I've never had one. Saw the recipe... looks like there's lots of sugar in them.

Just to let you know, I'll be offline most of the day/night today. We're heading up to Boston today for a Red Sox (vs. Oakland A's) game tonight at Fenway park.

You've probably heard by now that the lost ticket was found behind the betting machine and returned to the owner by an honest employee. The winner promised to compensate her bigtime.

I hadn't heard that. I meant to inquire what the result was.

We've been so busy following another story, the murder of Kristi Black and abduction of Justin Black out of Ruidoso. Kristi was the daughter of trainer Ralph Black.

I worked with the suspect, and considered him a good friend. I've been in a sort of shock since learning about it sunday night.

The horse is under rated, slow to mature just keep getting stronger and faster. And the trainer is very good.
