It's a drop noseband, has a noseband above and below the bit. It's for clamping the horses mouth closed so they don't open their mouth to evade the bit.

He seems to be coming into his own and has Derby winners close up being by a Kentucky Derby winning son of Mr Prospector (my favorite Derby sire), along with that other great... Seattle Slew, plus Dixieland Band and Coastal close up.

Capability (9) wins the first race of the day. And what a gorgeous one it is in Kentucky.
Seattle Slew is a favorite of mine too.
I felt a personal connection to him as a kid, thinking that because I live near Seattle, I had a relation to him. And I am glad his story played out so wonderfully. I remember when he died, on derby day 2002 at age 28, and bawled at the sight of his final days, stumbling and sometimes falling due to a degenerative back ailment. But he lived and died in great care, and I am always happy to hear that.
