Zogby poll: Americans fed up on illegal aliens

Majority against Bush plan for workers, 81% think local police should help feds

A new opinion poll by Zogby International indicates Americans are hardly pleased with the Bush administration on the subject of illegal immigration.

The poll, cited on CNN's "Lou Dobbs Tonight" program yesterday, noted a huge majority – 81 percent – believes local and state police should help federal authorities enforce laws against illegal immigration. Only 14 percent disagreed.

Voters were also asked, "Do you support or oppose the Bush administration's proposal to give millions of illegal aliens guest worker status and the opportunity to become citizens?" Only 35 percent gave their support, and 56 percent said no.

"A majority opposed illegal immigration," pollster John Zogby told CNN. "In fact, when you combine those two terms, 'illegal and immigration,' it really conjures up a considerable amount of negatives. And, in fact, we find that it's really across the board."

According to the report, the greatest opponents of illegal immigration are Democrats, African-Americans, women and people with household income below $75,000, those with the most to lose in the job market.

When it came to the status of the nation's borders, respondents were asked, "Do you agree or disagree that the federal government should deploy troops on the Mexican border as a temporary measure to control illegal immigration?" A clear majority – 53 percent – agree, while 40 percent disagree.

"The Minuteman program highlighted the fact that we need more tighter border security," Phil Kent of American Immigration Control Foundation told the network. "So I think these numbers again are good. It's a good civics lesson for the American people. It shows our elected leaders that we want action."

In summing up her report, CNN correspondent Lisa Sylvester noted, "So, while the public wants tougher borders, politicians are pushing to leave them open. A real disconnect."

Dobbs responded to that statement, saying: "The disconnect that you referred to, Lisa, between our elected officials and the people of this country is in no – on no other issue any more dramatic than on the issue of illegal immigration. The Zogby poll is just simply the most recent in a string of polls that show that the American people want their borders secure, they want immigration laws to be enforced, and to clean up what has become an atrocious mess on the part of our elected representatives serving better the interests of U.S. multinationals than the people who are working for a living in this country."

Within a week of the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks on the U.S., Zogby polled Americans on border security and immigration issues.

When asked whether the government was doing enough to control the border and screen those allowed into the country, 76 percent said the government was not doing enough.

Regarding future threats to the U.S., 72 percent of likely voters in 2001 said a dramatic increase in resources devoted to border control and enforcement of immigration laws would help reduce the chances of a terrorist attack in the future.

The media will frame the opinions. It is truly sad.

In the old days, before the new media, I would agree with you that the Republicans will come out badly no matter which side of this issue they choose. But look what happened in the last election, even with the MSM blasting away at Bush and Co. nonstop. I think the Republicans will self-destruct if they are too wimpy to take a stance. And it will be well-deserved, IMO.

From the article:
...the greatest opponents of illegal immigration are Democrats, African-Americans, women and people with household income below $75,000, those with the most to lose in the job market.

It feels very strange and creepy to be agreeing with the Democrat base on this. I feel the need for a 3rd party...

I'm opposed to illegal immigration too, but a Zogby poll has no meaning.

I think the poll included illegal aliens.

The CIA evidently fears that a serious effort to close the border would lead directly to a revolution in Mexico. Therefore, Bush will never offer more than half-hearted support for any enforcement measures, and will act just as he has been - as if he is hoping the whole issue will just go away

Sheesh...and the easy answer to that would be to line up any nuclear arsenal we have along the border and tell Mr. Fox or whoever is in power that if they try anything, the thin little strip of land between the American continents will suddenly open up and the Panama Canal will be a moot point.

Too easy for the Feds though to figure out.

I am really beginning to develope a strong dislike of people south of the border.

I honestly believe big changes are in the wind.

And for the better. But only if the heat that was flamed over the past 90 days is fanned white with fire under the backsides of our worthless politicians.

Only when they see their fortunes on the line will they respond. And they will respond.

If so many are opposed to illegal immigration, why do they elect so many politicians who are strongly in favor of it?

We're not given much choice now - most politicians favor illegal immigration. We're forced to choose the lesser of two evils, or go third party.

I believe a strong third party will emerge as a result of this illegal immigration mess.

Hey everone; this Zogby poll isn't a stand-alone. It's one more reflecting how average citizens are sick of seeing their legacy sold out. That includes Americans of Hispanic descent. They more than any other group would benefit from the long-needed crackdown of illegals. That McCain and other Neos are changing their tune lately proves that our overall pressure has been highly effective. To hear him praise the Minuteman Project after distancing himself from it was almost as convincing as Jane Fonda's pseudo-apology.

My buddy BayouRod - try this one on:

NRT never got married, thinking that he should have some viable future to assure a prospective bride. After foolishly leaving the prospect of military retirement behind he found he had few marketable skills. Rather than calling on people he knew could ease his way he preferred to do things the stupid way. Over time he found that no matter how willing he was to work hard basic expenses couldn't be met in a stagnant wage pool dragged down by illegal aliens living 12 to a house, pooling on vehicles and skipping on bills while exchanging identities. NRT payed his taxes while those people didn't. Those people depended on his taxes to fund their anchor baby's education and emergency medical care while NRT got bills from the VA that never should have been.

Abiding the law, living by the rules and refraining from reaming slaves of mental tyranny (aka:Political Correctness) has proven to be a losers' game in this time when our government gives neo-slavers a bye while looking the other way (so long as the campaign checks clears). When the corruption has gotten so out of hand that legitimate businesses are openly complaining about the unfair edge their unethical competitors have I ask you how this is good for America? Do you actually expect everyone to accept a top-to-bottem corruption that has made Mexico such a shining example of business practices?

You painted a spoiled punk union dependent using a foreign national for self perpetuation. That creature may exist somewhere, but he's totally outnumbered by illegals who came here expecting streets of gold who've fallen to sucking up the social safety net put in place for our own citizens. Odd how I would rather die than apply for any of those benfits while you're "noble savages" don't hesitate to rely on the dole. Their coming in so fast illegals who've been here for years are complaining about how the more recent arrivals are driving down wages. How is this good for America?

No, but Stormfront, the KKK, Buchanan/Tancredo and the anti-Mexican movement have everything to do with white trash.

I'm always amazed to see how many of them complain about crowded emergency rooms. Crowded emergency rooms are only a problem for people who use them for primary medical care instead of going to a doctor's office.

Victims of accidents, heart attacks, fires and other real emergencies recieve immediate care; only people complaining of flu symptoms, rashes, and ingrown toenails have to wait to see a doctor.

I'd be as ashamed to complain about crowded emergency rooms as to complain about having to stand in long lines at the welfare office.

After a very long time Bayourod has returned to FR, and after only a 2 days he has been banned again. This post (#99) was removed. I have read it 4 times and I still cannot discern the motivation in deleting it. I suspect your Admin Monitor just doesn't like discussion of immigration. This may or may not be with your approval. I am willing to lose my posting privileges to point this out to you.

Mr Robinson, I have given no more than a few hundred dollars over several years of Freerepublic posting. Immigration has been an extremely divisive issue on this forum, and I understand if you feel the issue is not worth the dissension and trouble open debate brings. I have read many of your posts. I know you are concerned about the MSM promoted racist image of conservatives and think it is possible you maybe unaware of this situation.
