Senior Al Qaeda Leader's Notebook Seized
ABC News ^ | May 6 2005

Posted on 05/06/2005 4:07:46 PM PDT by Dog

U.S. officials are working feverishly to decipher numbers and apparent codes in a notebook retrieved from suspected al Qaeda leader Abu Faraj al-Libbi, ABC News has learned.

Al-Libbi — believed to be third in command of al Qaeda leader after Osama bin Laden and Ayman al-Zawahiri — was arrested by Pakistani authorities on Monday.

He is suspected of leading two failed assassination attempts on the life of Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf.

Sources said officials believe al-Libbi's seized notebook contains "hot" contact information. They said officials are hopeful the notebook contains useful information because al-Libbi was stunned when he was captured.

One senior official described al-Libbi as "shocked" and enraged.

"He thought he was invincible," the source said. "He was caught with his pants down. This was not the time and place of his choosing."

Al-Libbi was trying to destroy the notebook when he was apprehended, multiple sources said.

How stupid are the US officials to tell this to reporters? Why not tell them he destroyed it.

This stuff makes me sick. Lives are being lost because of incompetence like this.

"He was caught with his pants down."

I thought he was caught with his dress on.

Remember a couple years ago - maybe longer - Pres Bush advised us that we would be hearing deliberate "misinformation"? This might be one of those times. And who better to leak this to than one of the alphabets.

i'm sure if they've released this info, theyve already deciphered the info. or maybe this is the misinformation Bush warned us about, to be used as tactics. we're not that stupid.

...and now they're trying to flush the quarry. You can bet that every piece of electronic evesdropping equipment in the ME is working overtime and all our spies are watching for midnight caravans.

"... was arrested by Pakistani authorities on Monday."

Nothing like giving our enemies a heads up.

They could have delayed announcing this.

It occurs to me that if al Libi actually didi manage to destroy the notebooks, this kind of announcement would be the next best thing, as it would likely prod some bad guys currently living on the down low into taking unwise observable activity.

I enjoyed the early news reports on this capture. First reports had him denying that he was an al Qaeda member. Later reports were that "after a few hours in custody" he confessed his position. I wonder if they put panties on his head or a dog collar around his neck.

I heard that they finally broke him by showing him nude photographs of Janet Reno...

Hope you all are right. That (disinfo) may be the case.

The only reason I brought it up was cuz the Bush admin gave out some info during the election campaign related to a false (as always) charge that the kerry camp was sludging around, about some 'militant' and then all across the globe other Gov agencies got left flat footfooted by all the leaks and had to move in prematurely on the people they were watching. Wish I remembered the story better, but I recall reading in detail about it back then and was quite irate about the whole thing.

For some reason I think Condi was involved and maybe it was in New York.

Actually it is an old intelligence technique. First, break the codes, then set up a monitoring network of the accounts / targets. Then release to the press that you are working one the codes fully expecting the press to carry that message.

What happens then is that the target organizations does a knee jerk reaction and attempts to neutralize the targets. Perhaps this means attempting to withdraw funds or to contact someone to tell them they are no longer safe, etc.

Then the Intel org moves in a sweeps up the targets and STILL has new leads to go after! It is really quite effective and has been used against all kinds of secrete organizations including the mob to great effect.

I wonder what was in the notebook...

5-4-05- Going to see Osama to do nails

5-5-05- 'Special date' with my goat, Fatima!

Etc...

The beauty of it is just as we don't know - neither do the targets. They have a big decision to make. :o)
