Analyst Charged With Passing Secret Info (Info on Iran was passed to Israel by Pentagon employee)
The Associated Press - The Free Press ^ | 5/4/05

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The FBI arrested a Pentagon analyst Wednesday on charges that he illegally passed classified information about potential attacks against U.S. forces in Iraq to employees of a pro-Israel group.

Larry Franklin, 58, of Kearneysville, W. Va., turned himself in Wednesday morning, FBI spokeswoman Debra Weierman said. He was scheduled to make an initial appearance in U.S. District Court in Virginia later Wednesday, Weierman said.

Franklin, who specialized on Iran and Middle Eastern affairs, allegedly gave the information to two people not entitled to receive it at a luncheon meeting at a restaurant in Arlington, Va., in June 2003, the Justice Department said in a statement. The people at the lunch were employees of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, a law enforcement official said on condition of anonymity because they are not identified in court papers.

FBI agents twice searched AIPAC offices as part of the investigation about whether Israel improperly obtained classified U.S. information on Iran. They also have interviewed two AIPAC employees about whether Franklin gave them classified information that wound up in Israel's hands.

AIPAC said it gave the FBI files related to those same two employees, who previously were identified - Steve Rosen, the director of research, and Keith Weissman, deputy director of foreign policy issues.

Neither still works for the group.

AIPAC declined to comment Wednesday.

It was not immediately clear how the information related to Iran.

I see Israel as having not done anything wrong in operating as a sovereign nation acting on its own best interests. Is it wrong from a US standpoint? That's another matter. However I do not see it as a 'stabbing in the back' either

OK, so perhaps it's not a "stabbing in the back." Mr. Franklin can take some comfort in that little tidbit while he spends 25 years in prison.

Mine too when you think about the ultimate target of the investigation. We will need lots of popcorn for the threads to come!

And I have no problem with him spending time in jail for giving defense material to another sovereign nation either. But the outrage at the audacity of Israel looking out for its own best interests is going over the top

A.C.

Do you know of a link that shows who are US allies as you described in post 44. I did some searches and I'm getting lots of gobbly goop.

US and allies are too general for Google.

Try a search on terms like "United States," "State Department," "treaties," etc.

I have no problem with Israel looking out for their own best interests. I bet, though, that a lot of people would have a problem with the U.S. looking out for OUR OWN best interests by throwing their f#%&ing ambassador out of the country and eliminating every penny of U.S. aid to Israel.

You're going to have to post some figures to support that statement, since I find that very hard to believe. Israel receives something like $3.5 billion in U.S. foreign aid every year just as "payment" for the Camp David accords of 1976, which doesn't include additional loans, loan guarantees, purchases of military hardware at discounted prices, etc.

US aid to Israel averages around 3 billion a year, and the the Israel GDP is over $100 Billion, so US Aid is around 2% of the Israeli economy. And Israel's military technological adavances pay off themselves. As I said I oppose ALL FOREIGN AID, but to just target Israel as a foreign aid sucker show you have a different agenda!

I don't recall any of these nations ever demanding that the U.S. provide any military help whatsoever.

I dont recall Israel ever demanding US Aid, but we do know that if the US didnt have troops sacrificing their lives in Iraq, Afghanistan, and in Kuwait (1991) then those countrues would not be where they are today. The current Iraqi government wouldnt be their and mass graves would be filling up still.

If you think the Muslims are great allies, then you really are dillusional.

These "if it wasn't for [So-and-So] we wouldn't have [Something-or-Other]" posts are probably the most infantile, idiotic messages I see posted here on FreeRepublic

These "if it wasn't for Israel we wouldn't have terrorism" posts (which I know you are leading up to) are the most infantile retarded posts here on FR and shows how some Freepers didnt wake up on 9/11!

One way or another, the KGB gained information from the Israelis we didn't want them to have. This is why we don't simply share everything willy-nilly with allies - you have no way of knowing where it goes after it leaves your hands.

As others have noticed, the Israelis have different priorities than the US. If trading our info to our enemies results in them saving some of their people's lives, at the cost of some of our people, we cannot count on them to be altruistic about it.

The bottom line is they value their people more than ours, and they value their security and interests more than the US's. In many things we have divergent and competing interests

You didn't include all the "non-cash" aid that I listed in my post, did you?

And you are being deliberately deceptive in statement about foreign aid to Israel vs. foreign aid to other countries. At no point in this thread did I "just target Israel as a foreign aid sucker" -- I imply pointed out that Israel cannot exist without U.S. aid. Israel is the focus of my comments because this thread is about an espionage case involving Israel. If this story had been someone in the Pentagon passing classified information to Jordan, we'd be talking about U.S. aid to Jordan (which is probably even more substantial -- in relative terms -- than U.S. aid to Israel).

I dont recall Israel ever demanding US Aid.

The Israeli government (as well as Egypt's government) only signed the Camp David accords in 1976 because the U.S. agreed to provide both countries financial support every year in the billions of dollars.

These "if it wasn't for Israel we wouldn't have terrorism" posts (which I know you are leading up to) are the most infantile retarded posts here on FR and shows how some Freepers didnt wake up on 9/11!

You might want to go back up the road a few miles and check your map again, since you appear to be lost on this thread. I have no idea what the hell you mean, since the statement you posted doesn't appear in any of my posts on this thread.

And I proved to you ISrael can and has existed before US AID. I thought you want Israel off US AID?

Israel only signed those accords because of that idiotic Israeli Leftists and a sell out Begin who thought he would get peace with Egypt.

You didn't prove anything, as you did not include all U.S. financial assistance to Israel in your "2% of Israel's GDP" statement. And I didn't say I want Israel off USAID, either -- I simply want them to treat us the way any beneficiary of financial largesse should treat their primary benefactor.

Israel only signed those accords because of that idiotic Israeli Leftists and a sell out Begin who thought he would get peace with Egypt.

Israel signed those accords because they had the sh!t scared out of them in the 1973 Yom Kippur war. The Begin government was smart enough to realize that the nation's economy would collapse if it had to finance a major military campaign with its neighbors every 5-10 years. In addition to all that, the U.S. government made it perfectly clear to both parties that the Sinai peninsula had to be given back to Egypt as part of the agreement.

YOu didnt prove Israel needs US to survive. I showed you Israel existed before US Aid in 1973 and was just fine.

I want ISrael off US AID because just like ISrael has their own interests that dont always coincide with American interests, America doesnt always have Israeli interests in mind.

Israel signed those accords because they had the sh!t scared out of them in the 1973 Yom Kippur war. What a way to twist history. First off in 1973 it was Nixon and that self hating JEw Kissinger who begged Israel not to attack first. Israel listened foolishly and it cost Israel greatly, still Israel won and was prepared to Finish Egypt and Syria off, but once again gave into American Pressure.

Israel got NOTHING for giving back the Siani. They gave up oil reserves THEY DEVELOPED, and now have to deal with tunnels built across the Sinai that transport weaposn to PLO and Hamas.
