WASHINGTON (AP) -- The FBI arrested a Pentagon analyst Wednesday on charges that he illegally passed classified information about potential attacks against U.S. forces in Iraq to employees of a pro-Israel group.
Larry Franklin, 58, of Kearneysville, W. Va., turned himself in Wednesday morning, FBI spokeswoman Debra Weierman said. He was scheduled to make an initial appearance in U.S. District Court in Virginia later Wednesday, Weierman said.
Franklin, who specialized on Iran and Middle Eastern affairs, allegedly gave the information to two people not entitled to receive it at a luncheon meeting at a restaurant in Arlington, Va., in June 2003, the Justice Department said in a statement. The people at the lunch were employees of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, a law enforcement official said on condition of anonymity because they are not identified in court papers.
FBI agents twice searched AIPAC offices as part of the investigation about whether Israel improperly obtained classified U.S. information on Iran. They also have interviewed two AIPAC employees about whether Franklin gave them classified information that wound up in Israel's hands.
AIPAC said it gave the FBI files related to those same two employees, who previously were identified - Steve Rosen, the director of research, and Keith Weissman, deputy director of foreign policy issues.
Neither still works for the group.
AIPAC declined to comment Wednesday.
It was not immediately clear how the information related to Iran.
You pretty much have to get waaaaayyyy above the level of "analyst" before you're empowered to make decisions like that ;)
Doesnt make it right but it happens.
Your are an ignorant child. Israel was created in 1948 without the financial support of the USA. The US provided very little political help, mainly because the State Department was more concerned with pleasing the Arab Muslim Terrorists.
Israelis fought and died on THEIR OWN to protect their country.
America did not start to give Aid to Israel until 1973.
If you think Israel are such bad allies, the what about the Muslims who require us to sacrifice the lives of our soldiers and still hate us by dancing in the streets when we are attacked, and supporting terrorism against.
Please reveal your real agenda!
There's actually one exception to the statement I just made (any Freeper who knows it can go to the head of the class!), but it is so narrow in scope that it really doesn't make the two countries "allies" in any sense.
Israel is an ally and the opposite is not always true (Oslo, Roadmap, other suicide pacts pushed by the U.S.). In the war on terror, the two countries should be on the same page, period.
But the media will keep trying to push these "spy stories" and apparently people still happily lap them up.
Only 2 billon dollars goes to Israel compared to the hundreds of billions we send to Arab Muslim Nazis who hate us.
If anything Israel by taking American aid put restrictions on her defense that is leading to the death of more Israelis.
The middle east would be far better off if the Israelis didnt take American aid, and had the free hand to use the force neccessary to protect themselves.
So giving aid doesn't make them an ally?
Exactly why Israel should ignore the roadmap and reject American aid, because America will not be able to or want to prevent the Arab Muslim Nazis from destroying Israel.
And then some anti-Israel Freepers bash me for saying America wont protect Israel from an attack.
1973 was the perfect example, America promised Israel support but didnt budge at first, only when Israel was prepared to use Nuclear Weapons, did the US start sending equipment from Germany to Israel, and convinced the Soviets to have the Arab Muslim Nazis back off!
Yes, Isearl is our ally. Saddam and the rest of his Baathist thugs were primary funders of Pali tertrorists : they were Pali training camps in Iraq and Saddam made no secret of the fact that he paid $25 grand to the family of any successful homocide bomb or any Pali "martyr", prompting Pali terrorists to shoot other, lower Pali terrorists in the backs during conflicts, blaming it on the IDF and thus claiming the bucks.
Iraqi terrorism is of extreme interest to our own national security, but extreme, immediate interest to Israeli national security due to the close relationship Saddam and Yasser had with other terrorists destroying Israel in a war of apparent attrition.
X42, PRChina's man in Washington.
. . . mainly because the State Department was more concerned with pleasing the Arab Muslim Terrorists.
The State Department has long been reluctant to grant formal recognition to Israel, and even today Israel is unique among the nations of the world in one respect -- the U.S. State Department usually does not grant formal recognition to a nation whose borders are not clearly defined or are the subject of a major dispute with neighboring countries.
If you think Israel are such bad allies, the what about the Muslims who require us to sacrifice the lives of our soldiers and still hate us by dancing in the streets when we are attacked, and supporting terrorism against.
Which Muslims required us to sacrifice the lives of our soldiers?
I thought the same for the same reason until I worked my way down this thread. I'm getting confused again though :P
Even if it won't hurt us, it's very bad policy to let him get away with giving classified information to anyone without prior permission...especially to those not cleared to receive such information. Besides, he also admitted to leaking classified info to the media, indicating he would sell any info to the highest bidder.
These aren't just "pushed by the U.S." -- there is a sizeable element within the Israeli government itself that has long supported these types of measures.
If receiving U.S. aid qualifies a nation as an "ally" of the United States, then most Freepers would be appalled at many of the "allies" this country has.
Israel would never have existed had Israelis fought and sacrificed their blood to defeat nearly 100 million Arab Muslim Nazis at the time, when they numbered barely half a million.
s, I can say with some certainty that Israel would not exist today without U.S. military and financial support (their economy would collapse under the weight of their massive military expenditures).
Wrong again only 2% of the Israeli budget is from American Aid. If Israel wasnt allies with America they could easily take care of their enemies and their would be no more military expenditures because their would be no ENEMY LEFT!
Which Muslims required us to sacrifice the lives of our soldiers?
Kuwait and Saudi Arabia 1991, Iraq 2003-? Afghanistan 2001? So far thousands of Americans have died because of our great Muslims Allies.
By the way if it wasnt for Israel we wouldnt have Pentium Chips, which were invented in Israel. So if your computer uses a Pentium better throw it away the Zionist Mossad Jooos could be Spying on you!
You want every analayst or secretary making security decisions?
This is another Jonathan Pollard type deal.Franklin better hope not. The information Pollard gave the Israelis found its way to the Soviets, for whatever reason. Pollard did tremendous damage and deserved his sentence.

You're going to have to post some figures to support that statement, since I find that very hard to believe. Israel receives something like $3.5 billion in U.S. foreign aid every year just as "payment" for the Camp David accords of 1976, which doesn't include additional loans, loan guarantees, purchases of military hardware at discounted prices, etc.
Kuwait and Saudi Arabia 1991, Iraq 2003-? Afghanistan 2001? So far thousands of Americans have died because of our great Muslims Allies.
I don't recall any of these nations ever demanding that the U.S. provide any military help whatsoever.
By the way if it wasnt for Israel we wouldnt have Pentium Chips, which were invented in Israel. So if your computer uses a Pentium better throw it away the Zionist Mossad Jooos could be Spying on you!
These "if it wasn't for [So-and-So] we wouldn't have [Something-or-Other]" posts are probably the most infantile, idiotic messages I see posted here on FreeRepublic.
