Conservatives demand immigration minister apologize for Klan remarks

OTTAWA — The Conservatives want an apology from Immigration Minister Joe Volpe for comparing them to the Ku Klux Klan.
The Opposition party is made up of racists, Volpe said today, calling members recognizable "notwithstanding that they don't have their cowl and their cape."
"The Klan looks like it's still very much alive," the minister added.
Volpe made the comments in response to a poster prank in which two Conservative MPs refer to the Liberals as the The Liberanos, a mocking reference to the television Mafia show The Supranos.
"I think these are a couple of fine, upstanding members of the new Conservative Klan," Volpe said, referring to a picture of Tory MPs Lee Richardson and Werner Schmidt holding a copy of the poster.
Volpe owes his party, and all Canadians, an apology, Conservative MP Rahim Jaffer responded.
"To hear a minister of the Crown make that kind of insinuation about anybody, whether they are his political opponents or not, is reprehensible," Jaffer said in a written statement.
"Volpe is trivializing the hatred, violence, and murder practised by the Klan," he added.
"He has sunk to a new low — one unbefitting a minister of the Crown, and unbefitting a parliamentarian."
The poster portrays former prime minister Jean Chrétien against a backdrop featuring likenesses of Prime Minister Paul Martin and Public Works Minister Scott Brison, as well as key players in the sponsorship scandal.
In bold red letters, it reads The Liberanos — Canadian Politics Redefined.
The poster is one more example proving that the Conservatives don't understand immigrants, and don't understand "how Canada works," said Volpe.
But the minister's reaction to the poster went beyond the pale, said Jaffer.
"It is beyond irresponsible to suggest that any parliamentarian advocates torture and murder of innocent people," he said.
"I hope that Joe Volpe would do the honourable thing as soon as possible, and fully retract and apologize for his remarks," Jaffer said.
"He deals with a ministry that must be seen as above politics, and this type of demagoguery only further undermines his credibility."

You never know with us Canadians especially the 'visible minority' population which I belong too, but there seems to be some common sense seeping into those thick heads lately.
More and more of them seem to get that this is all hogwash being pedeled by the Fiberals to mask their own criminal African style government.
But then again this is Canada so I wouldn't be surprised if the Liberal's were to stay in power, because for the majority it seems only the not so free healthcare matters, as long as those working the long hours to pay for it keep doing so.
Now that was just plain stupid.
