Five months after Gov. James McGreevey left office in disgrace, a new public opinion poll shows that 49 percent of New Jerseyans would consider voting for him in a future election.
......Zogby International was commissioned by the gay rights advocacy group Garden State Equality to measure public support for gay marriage (which remains at 55 percent statewide). The group piggy-backed the McGreevey question onto the poll, largely in an effort to test electoral support for gay and lesbian candidates.
The poll asked voters what their opinion would be if McGreevey ran for another office, like Congress or the Legislature.
6 percent said they would never vote for McGreevey because he is gay.
43 percent said they would never vote for McGreevey, but for reasons other than his sexuality.
49 percent said they would consider voting for McGreevey, depending on the issues or opponents.
The poll even found that 30 percent of those who identified themselves as Republicans would consider voting for McGreevey, a Democrat.
"People in this state are so progressive, a straight politician might not have polled as well," Goldstein said. If on the basis of his sexuality "only 6 percent wouldn't vote for this man, who has all this baggage, my goodness, they would certainly support an openly gay candidate without the baggage."
The Zogby-Garden State Equality poll, which surveyed 804 New Jersey voters from April 12 to 14......was conducted two weeks before the former governor was fired from the Weiner Lesniak law firm amid ethical questions over McGreevey's representation of clients with whom he had signed state contracts.
The Garden State Equality-Zogby poll was aimed at measuring public opinion on gay marriage -- an idea that McGreevey publicly opposed during his administration.
The legality of gay marriage in New Jersey is tied up in state court.

I'm surprised this article doesn't mention car insurance, which went down a lot in New Jersey. Previously rates were at mob-extortion levels, now they are in line with the rest of the country. McG took credit for the decrease. I don't know whether he's justified in that or not.
New Jersey is just plain DUMB
I wonder if that extortion charge will ever see the light of day. I think it's unlikely, and wonder if we'll ever know why.
New Jersey is DUMB,
New Jersey is not progressive, but PERVERTED and EVIL.
Yes, it was the corruption that did McGreevey in. Many have noted how McGreevey conveniently took up the banner of gay rights in an effort to divert attention from the charges and make criticism of him sound like "gay-bashing." A true Oprah moment!
I'm officially projecting Hillary the winner of New Jersey and all of its electoral votes in 2008. Memo to GOP: Spend your money elsewhere. New Jersey is made up of too many corrupt people eager to vote for corrupt pols.
Those 49 % would vote for skeevy McGreevey should they think their inherant right to taxpayers money was in jepardy, or if a true Conservative was running.
" ...The poll even found that 30 percent of those who identified themselves as Republicans would consider voting for McGreevey, a Democrat."
Let's get this straight ... There are no Republicans in New Jersey.
They even dig up the dead (Frank Lautenberg) to run against so called Republicans in N.J.. ;)
Come to think of it, he could move to Michigan and get a high level job in the Jenny from the Block administration. She's into appointing girls to high level state jobs.

New Jersey is a "Rat" nest. Where's the shock?
I'm not shocked either. But I am disappointed. What a nutty state. Maybe Hellery should run for gov there.
Probably the insurance rates went down b/c Russian criminals reconcentrated their efforts to bilk auto insurers via staged accident elsewhere.
Since I live in the nutty state of New York, I'd be very pleased if Hillary! would run for governor of New Jersey.
(She has her sights set on bigger things, however.)
ROTFLOL-----he's nicely groomed---lips and nails match perfectly.
Although the earrings could have been less dangly for daytime wear----LOL.
Do New Yorkers really like to hear Frank Sinatra 'songs'?
Maybe they should have asked if they'd vote for McGreevey if he married his boyfriend Cipel? The conventional wisdom is, it depends on how you frame the poll question.
"Memo to GOP: Spend your money elsewhere. New Jersey is made up of too many corrupt people eager to vote for corrupt pols."
no kidding
why is it that it seems our playing field shrinks even though we are the majority?
While I realize many NJ voters are delusional, I still question the poll. And he did leave to avoid the numerous corruption chargees. It was common knowledge that he was gay going back to his Woodbridge days.
