Most of Mrs. Bush's humor at the correspondents' dinner was just right: Edgy but not over the edge. But I think the stripper and horse jokes were totally beneath her.
Just put it to the other-shoe test: If it were Teresa Heinz Kerry standing up on the dais telling the same jokes, the conservative commentariat would be buzzing for the rest of the year about what a tasteless skank she is.

Those are your words, not mine.
Up your medication. I was more thinking of the big bruisers with sticks beating on women showing ankle;
But, obviously, we have different perspectives on the world.
Good luck to you.
Some former broken glass Republicans in my neighborhood, people who volunteered with me last September and October and I know got hand written letters from the president like I did, because of all the work we did, aren't going to be so broken glass anymore, if you know what I mean.
Boy, that was a run on sentence :-)
Well, you know that's why their so mad: they cannot win without US, despite what they've been saying for years and years and years.
Are you really a Lincoln Chafee fan? Now there's a moderate for you. Michael Savage calls them "check pants Republicans" --- but I think he means "plaid pants" Republicans: the kind of pants you see on old geezers at the country club golf course.
Look, I have lurked long enough to know that you are not a supporter of many of the president's policies. Ok, most of them. I wholeheartedly support your right to voice opposition. Generally speaking, I disagree with much of what you post. But this one thing is true: the President does not walk on water. On that we can agree.
The thing that got my knickers in a wad about this episode (and got me to delurk) is that those who are upset play so incredibly smoothly into the hands of those who will use it against me and my beliefs. It becomes an excuse not to listen to our ideas. I think many of us feel an obligation to point out that most of us are not irrational, judgmental, dour, excitable prudes.
People who disagreed with the comments probably aren't either...but they sure are starting to sound that way. I want liberals to understand that we know what is going on in the world, but choose differently for ourselves.
There are principles and there is politics. One is a goal, the other is a game. Play the game well...and you will reach the goal. This, in my opinion is about the politics part.
On a personal note, it's nice to talk to you. Like I said, I have read your posts for a long time. Perhaps someday we will get to debate a principle, instead of the politics.
It's not Christians; it's the few who believe that they and only they are the "real, true" Christians.
And I do think a majority of the people at this web site are uncomfortable with the most strident of the lot.
YOU are the extremist fringe.
Sure. Right.
They want to take over the party and continue with their little coup on FR. They're mostly male and have major issues with women.
What is the word for people who get involved in these mass debates?
Lynch Mob?
Okay, so if someone disagrees with you on something as stupid as whether Laura's joke was in poor taste or not, they must automatically be a phony Christian, a liberal in disguise, and a member of the Taliban. Makes no sense Peach. Your outrage was stupid. You keep bringing up issues that haven nothing to do with this thread, so I'm thinking you realize your attack on Christians and name calling rants were silly. I wasn't bothered by the jokes, but it didn't send me into a name calling tirade to hear that others were. You obviously have many other issues with religious people that cloud your ability to remain sane in some threads.
"I'll ask you, too, then: Do you think I can corner the market on buquas when the impending Taliban takeover of FR comes to pass?"
Lol, apparently to some here, the Taliban have already taken over.
You corner the market on burquas; I'll jump on the soon-to-be thriving Koran market...ooops, er...I mean Bible market.
True. The poster...Peach is it? That poster have read one or two extreme comments like that on other threads and now is pretending that all the posters who took exception to some of Laura's comments believe she shouldn't even have spoken.
This is the same poster who will compare anyone who disagrees with a couple of comments in Laura's speech to being like a member of the Taliban.
The poster (Peach) is a bit disturbed and is not able to reason effectively.
Most of us have. And it's not really "moving." It's REPELLING to the middle.
Maybe if you'd been around here longer than 30 odd days you'd know what you were talking about.
That's what you'd LIKE her to do, but that's not what she did.
The vast majority of people on this forum are Christian; the vast majority of us are NOT pinheaded myopic fundamentalists.
You've been around long enough to know that when you mention someone in a post, you should ping them.
And if you can't keep up with the threads and understand that it was more than a few posters and it's been more than this issue, then you really should try to educate yourself a little before you make foolish statements like that.
The thing that made Laura Bush's jokes so uniquely funny was precisely the fact that she is known to be a wholesome, somewhat prudish woman of great moral character.
That said, I just cant believe people are so upset.
Sometimes I wonder if there isn't some truth to constant claims from liberal's that conservatives are uptight prudes.
It's not going to happen, no matter what they say.
Laura, you did real good, and screw these narrow minded Freepers on this site that can't see or think beyond their noses!! Bravo!
Some Republicans ARE a lot of fun at a party, and actually have a sense of humor, as opposed to quite a few pinched Democrats. Unfortunately, there are a boatload of pinched Repubs around.
