ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) - Ten years after a firefighter was left brain-damaged and mostly mute during a 1995 roof collapse, he did something that shocked his family and doctors: He perked up.
"I want to talk to my wife," Donald Herbert said out of the blue Saturday. Staff members of the nursing home where he has lived for more than seven years raced to get Linda Herbert on the telephone.
It was the first of many conversations the 44-year-old patient had with his wife, four sons and other family and friends during a 14-hour stretch, said Herbert's uncle, Simon Manka.
"How long have I been away?" Herbert asked.
"We told him almost 10 years," the uncle said. "He thought it was only three months."

Perhaps, but not from the standpoint most around here take. It is the rush to equate every brain damaged person who is still living to Terri has become a bit overwrought.
Not on its face. I was going more by your other post where you referred to "the conservatives" as a group to which you don't belong, as well as your observation that we are generally laughably hypocritical.
That would imply that you're a troll.
I believe that the government should not make medical decisions for the indivual, period.
I tend to agree. So why was it OK for a judge to in Ms. Schiavo's case? Because he happened to agree with your world view?
Terri, at one time, was walking with assistance, before Mr. Schiavo got his lawsuit money. No telling where she would've been today had he continued the treatment she was supposed to get."
Give me a break. You have any proof of the fact that after her injury she was walking with help but they stopped her rehab and she went into a PVS? I have heard the most absurd stories ever on this site when it comes to Terri. I hope you don't honestly belive this.
Well as you and I, along with a few others, know the world is full of PINO's who are not decent human beings.
PINO=People In Name Only :-)
Sounds like a good idea to try to find out why such patients recover, instead of being shocked when it happens.
LOL. Great use of sarcasm
Monsignor Nelson Henry Baker, familiarly known as "Father Baker," was born on February 16, 1841 in Buffalo, New York, USA. His father was Lutheran, his mother Catholic. After his early education in public schools, he went into business. In 1868, he resumed his education at Canisius College, Buffalo, as one of its first students. He entered Our Lady of Angels Seminary at Niagara University, New York, in 1870, and was ordained a diocesan priest on March 19, 1876.For five years he served as Assistant Pastor at Lackawanna, then as curate in Corning, New York (then part of the Buffalo Diocese). In 1882, he was recalled to Lackawanna as Superintendent of the Institution destined to become Our Lady of Victory Homes of Charity, with an orphanage, industrial school, home for infants, facilities for unwed mothers, and maternity hospital. Father Baker was named Vicar General of the Buffalo Diocese in 1902, a Domestic Prelate in 1905, and later raised to the rank of Prothonotary Apostolic. He promoted devotion to the Eucharist and Our Lady of Victory. He built the Basilica of Our Lady of Victory, which was consecrated in 1926. Father Baker administered the Basilica Parish with the adjacent homes of Charity, for the rehabilitation of countless underprivileged men, women and children, until late in life. Father Baker died on July 29, 1936 in Lackawanna, New York.
In the Summer of 1987, the Congregation for the Causes of the Saints approved the initiation of Father Baker's cause and confirmed the title "Servant of God - Nelson Baker."
2.) If Terri was actually in PVS
3.) How many bones were found to be broken within 18 of her 'accident'
4.) A detailed list of what she was capable of doing BEFORE Michael won his settlement
Then, we can have a discussion about it.
I think the burden is on you. Why don't you back up your claim at least that she was walking on her own at some point after her accident. I also noticed you put 'accident' in quotes. Did Michael cause her accident in your mind.
I personally don't recall what the 'procedures' were at the several rehabilitation hospitals she had been to. BUT I do very certainly remember, and posted several times the scan of her medical chart from Mediplex where her doctor wrote in her chart that Terri 'sometimes says "STOP" during procedures'.
It was in that same timeframe that Michael himself, and his lawyer even maintained in court that Terri was responsive. After Michael got the award money, HE changed his tune. But the caregivers, priests, Schindler family, and legal staff that was allowed to visit, KEPT RIGHT ON hearing her occasionally speak an occasional word.
....wonder what the liberals are saying now.

Those who walk in the dark in the noon-day have no awareness....the Liberals and a few (freepers) conscience is made of teflon!

28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;
29 Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers,
30 Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,
31 Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful:
32 Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.
This is New York after all. Bribes do go on up there. There are also Schiavo's in New York fyi.
970 WFLA RADIO Glenn Beck Radio. Bobby Schindler was just on Glenn Beck's program. Bobby said that "Mark Fuhrman is going to look into the night Terri collapsed." (well, it's a little late imo but AT LEAST MF'S on the case.)
You need to do your homework.
This written by a New York Daily News' reporter.
###"At one point, his doctors told me he wasn't coming back - period," said Burton, who represented Herbert's wife in a lawsuit against the owner of the building whose roof collapsed on the firefighter.
But Herbert's mother, Geraldine, never gave up hope. Every day since her son's injury, the elderly woman kept a vigil at his side, reading to him and praying. She was joined daily by her husband until his death a few years ago.
"She was his support; she was his life," said Pat Dempsey, 63, a neighbor who has known Herbert since he was a boy. "She had the hope that this would happen to him someday and it happened."###
Parents vigil same as Terri's parents. There will be a price to pay as secular society plays god

>>>>>>...a miracle of God. I know that He could have done the same thing for Terri
>>>>He didn't. I guess he hated Terri.
>>*snort* ;~D
Since when is a repulsive joke about God HATING someone because he didn't
stop their execution... SNORTINGLY FUNNY?
This falls into the category of being offensive to the Christian faith AND
twisting the knife in those who are grieving.
Lighten up Francis.
Here is additional writing by another N Y Daily News reporter quoting an MD. The last sentence certainly makes one think. Of course with the culture of death, such thinking does not exist.
###"That's why Herbert's case is "remarkable," Gropen said. "There's a lot that we still don't know about recovery from brain injury."
There have been other remarkable cases. In 2003, Terry Wallis of Arkansas regained consciousness after 19 years, but his brain function remained limited.
"It does raise questions of how much more cognitive function is actually present in some people who appear to be unresponsive," Gropen said."###
