Channel 4 has a located a statewide list of teachers accused of sex crimes. The list of crimes range from rape, murder, arson, drug trafficking, assault, gay pornography, and even attempting to buy children for sex crimes.
State Representative Donna Rowland is leading a new task force studying teacher abuse of students.
"Our goal is to find out how rampant it is and if there are any guidelines we need to put into place so that we are protecting our children when we send them off to classrooms," said Rowland.
In the past 5 years, 46 Tennessee teachers have lost their licenses for sex crimes against students. 150 cases are still pending and -- that's 200 in just five years. This the equivalent of one new teacher sex criminal for every week of the school year for five years running.
The figures do not include a teacher who finds out he is under investigation and just resigns. By state law, a superintendent must report any resignation that is possibly based on immoral conduct, drugs, or lying. But even the state admits the law is one of those that is easy to ignore.
"The law is somewhat toothless. We'd like to tighten up the reporting process we co- could put teeth in it, said Gary Nixon, Phd, Board of Education.
I'm not, but then again one of my middle school teachers married one of his former students on her 18th birthday.
Moral Absolutes Ping.
One more for the road. People think that Catholic priests cornered the market on crimes against children. Looks as though public school teachers are miles ahead. Solution - no homosexuals allowed to become priests, and shut down government schools. The tax money saved can create zillions of private schools, and people will be able to afford them with the vast reduction in property taxes.
Parents, keep your children away from public screwels!
Let me know if you want on/off this pinglist.
I wonder how the Administrators and School Board Types stack up?
What ever happened to Ellie Nessler? I'm glad you brought her up, because I had forgotten all about her :(
Just damn. Middle school? I'm starting to feel like I grew up in the middle ages...
This is just for Tenn. If Tenn is reflective of nationwide statistics, then the situation is horrendous.
From what I've heard, my local Catholic school is as liberal as any public school. I investigated the possibilities, years ago. Many decent Christian schools though.
What state are you in?
In my state, teachers must have a criminal background check when they are hired - and their employment is provisional until those results are in. Another background check is required at least every 5 years, when teaching certificates are renewed.
Thanks for reminding me. I remember hearing about cancer. I hope she and her son are doing well.
Well, let’s see...She’s currently serving a six-year sentence for charges related to manufacturing the drug methamphetamine. Her son was convicted of beating someone to death after being booked in 18 separate cases over five years as an adult, and a long juvenile record.
Well I didn’t know about that. Got links?
This is a few years late on this topic but Nessler is back in jail for making meth. And the son that was molested is in jail too for killing his neighbor... not so nice of a family after all!
